A 24-year-old man who allegedly bludgeoned a Missoula woman with the sharp end of a claw hammer is in custody and charged with aggravated assault, officials said Saturday.
Thomas Allen, a Hamilton man, is being held at the Missoula County Detention Facility on the felony charge, said Missoula County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Dominick. He said the victim was taken to the hospital with severe head injuries, but her condition was not known Saturday.
Late Friday, a woman working for an escort service arrived at Allen’s room at the Redwood Lodge near the Wye, Dominick said. He declined to name the woman, but identified her as a Missoula female in her mid-30s.
Allen and the woman were discussing the financial transaction when he allegedly began bashing her head with a framing hammer, Dominick said.
“He hit her more than once. There’s quite a bit of blood at the scene,” he said.
Dominick said the woman began screaming and a nearby friend called 9-1-1. Allen then jumped out the window from the second floor. The friend saw him jump and told Allen to wait for the police; Dominick said Allen then waited and cooperated with responding officers.
Allen told officials a stranger was in his room when he awoke but evidence didn’t support his story, the sergeant said. Rather, he said Allen had set up the transaction with the escort service.
At the scene, the victim was conscious and cooperated with law enforcement, Dominick said. She was taken to St. Patrick Hospital with lacerations and broken bones in her jaw. He declined to call the hospital for an update of her condition, but said her injuries had not appeared to be life-threatening. The hospital needs the person’s name to provide the update.
Allen is being held on $50,000 bail and is expected to appear in court Monday.
