Police charged a Philadelphia man Sunday in the beating death of his girlfriend, whose body was found in a rural neighborhood about 16 miles from the Lancaster city street corner where she was allegedly beaten and thrown into a car.
The body of city resident Tonya Jean Fetrow, 28, was found about 7 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Long Lane in East Donegal Township, investigators said.
City police allege that Kenneth Brown Jr. brutally beat Fetrow at the corner of Fairview Avenue and St. Joseph Street before driving her to East Donegal Township, where her body was found in the driveway of a home.
At least two people watched Brown choke and punch Fetrow before "stomping" her head and neck, police said. One witness tried to intervene, but could not stop Brown's onslaught, police said.
Fetrow was beaten just after midnight and her body was found about seven hours later.
Brown, 29, was arrested Sunday about 4 p.m. as he was walking toward the city on Columbia Avenue in Mountville.
He has been charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.
Investigators said a homicide charge likely will be filed after Fetrow's autopsy this morning.
Witnesses gave police the following account of the beating that allegedly led to Fetrow's death.
The couple and a female friend were together in a white Buick in Lancaster city prior to the beating. When Fetrow stopped the car at St. Joseph Street and Fairview Avenue, Brown grabbed Fetrow from the rear passenger seat, the friend said. Brown choked Fetrow inside the car until the friend pulled Brown's hands away.
Fetrow then got out of the car and tried to run away, but Brown caught up to her on the sidewalk and the assault continued.
The man punched the woman's head more than 10 times, knocking her to the ground, a second witness told police.
At that point, the friend tried to push Brown away, but he wouldn't stop.
The friend "made more than one attempt to stop the crime," Anders said.
The second witness told police she could hear the woman screaming for help while being pummeled.
The screaming stopped, however, when the woman fell to the ground. Brown then started kicking and stomping her, who appeared unconscious.
Both witnesses saw the man stomping the woman's head and neck.
After the beating, Brown grabbed the woman by the hair and threw her into the back of the Buick "like a sack of potatoes," one witness told police.
Brown drove out of the city, and at some point, dumped Fetrow's body in the driveway of an East Donegal Township home. An occupant of that home called 911 after finding the body about 7 a.m.
Investigators could not say when the woman died and if she might have survived if she had gotten immediate medical treatment.
