I was surprised that I liked this. I don't tend to like fantasies but Pan's Labyrinth is incredibly well made. I personally thought the war sub-plot was really good and it helped me get sucked into the film.

One of my favorite films of 2006. It didn't beat Children of Men, but it was close. I will be buying this.

Haha I just posted a list in The Fountain thread before reading this. But yeah, I agree that Pan's Labyrinth wasn't quite as good as Children of Men.

I'm not entirely sure, but is there not a four-disc DVD to be released?

I don't know but the Region 3 Limited Edition is awesome looking. Perhaps another region is getting the 4 disc set.

I for one always check out info about a film before I spend my money to see it in theaters. I don't really think the trailer for a film needs to include all of that information.

Not that I am bitching, as I knew it was gonna be subtitled, but they did do a great job with the trailers making sure NO speaking parts are shown.
I discussed this before, but I am glad they did this as I think a lot of people I saw the theater with found out that you can watch a movie with subtitles and get more out of it than had it been dubbed.

I agree, and we both know they did that to put butts in the seats. But I equally blame the people that went in to it not knowing. It's not marketings job to describe the movie, it's their job to make you want to see it.
I agree that some people actually got something out of the fact that it was subtitled as opposed to dubbed.

I think I was in the same boat as you when I saw this. It just really didn't hold my interest. I understood the message of escapism from the horrors of the real world and the symbolism involved in it; it just didn't interest me. It didn't engage me and I felt that same message (of imagination acting as a shelter from harsh reality) had been catered to in a dozen other movies. The only way this movie stood out to me was the darkness associated with it; the cruelity of the little girl's stepfather, the nature of war.

Pan's Labyrinth was a HUGE let-down.
It was nothing like I expected. I went into the flick thinking it was going to be this visual surreal masterpiece along the lines of Alice in Wonderland, Legend, The Dark Crystal, etc. Well, it wasn't. Very unbalanced. Every time the fawn appeared or Ofelia needed to perform a task in the "Labyrinth" I thought to myself, "now the film is about to begin" and then bam, a couple minutes later, back to the same long overly drawn-out story about the asshole Captain fighting against the rebellion soldiers in the hills or just being a gigantic dickhead. I just didn't give two shits about that storyline and it completely dominated the screen time.
Ofelia exploring a magical world and encountering various strange creatures throughout her journey turned into the subplot instead of the main plot. Not at all what I expected and I was highly disappointed. It looked very nice, it was extremely well-made, and now that my expectations for a visual fantasy masterpiece are diminished, the film will probably play better a second time around. Right now, I'm in no hurry to watch it again.

kiddcapone, your critique actually resonates with me. While I loved the film, I also felt that the focus wasn't where my brain wanted it to be.
I have no problem excusing the director in hindsight. The terror of reality was the perfect juxtoposition for the fantasy of children, which we all remember taking solace in (I still do). I think the film could have been better, not by taking away from the REAL plotline, but by adding to the FANTASY one. And for all I know, the director wanted the same thing, but editing killed the potential product.
Still, a great film in my opinion, and one that holds up to a second showing.

I've heard other people echo kiddcapone's statements before and I blame marketing. If you were to watch the trailers and what-not, it did look like an Alice in Wonderland type fantasy film, which it was not.

I've yet to see it, but I am definitely glad that I was warned about the nature of the plot before renting it. The trailers totally made it look like a Narnia-type flick.

Yeah, that's a shame. I noticed that most of those trailers that made it look like a fantasy flick were also designed around scenes with not talking. Obviously to hide the fact that the movie was subtitled.

I don't mind subtitles, personally.
Incidentally, I heard a couple of PISSED parents chatting about the movie at the rental store not too long ago. Not only were they misled by the commercials and had little kids too young to read that well watching it, they totally missed the R rating. I heard it had some surprisingly graphic violence in it.

I refuse to watch foreign films any other way. But it would have been nice to inform moviegoers that the film was a foreign language film. But then again, it did get a lot of people in the theater. I have told the story before, but when I went and saw this in the theater, a few people were vocal about their dislike of finding out they paid to read a movie...but none of them left. It was great to see people realize that you can watch a film with subs.

Actually, imo, it had one of the most brutal deaths shown in a movie.

No, not at all. I was just hoping you liked the movie.
It's sort of like knowing someone who likes the same music as you, and then you find this band and you listen to them and think they are pretty fucking cool. You get all jazzed up to turn your friend on to it, and upon listening, they say "Hate it".
I don't mind people not liking Pan's, I was just hoping you were not one of them.
