View Full Version : Searching the front page and the forums before posting

Recently, I posted a story that had previously been featured on the front page. While the current search feature let me verify it was not already in the forums, it did not (as far as I can see) search the front pages.
Is there a way to do such a search from the forums? If there was such a feature and it indicated a hit, I would have PM'd the author the update. Then again, I guess having a thread in the forums for this asshole is good too.
Which brings me to my second question. If we find an update to a story that was on the front page and is not in the forums, what is the proper procedure (PM the author with an update, post an update in that article's comments, or start a thread in the forums)?
If I have missed this information elsewhere.......I suck.:hello:

I don't think it's been addressed, TMS.
Doing a forum search does NOT cover anything on the front page, but if it's on the FP, I like it to be represented in the forums as well.
As for stories located in both places, I definitely would post updates to the forum thread (and as a comment to the FP story, but only if you want to). Me, personally, I would love getting PMs to let me know there's something new on a story I wrote for the FP, but other authors may not. I'll let them speak to that!

If you search on the front page using "SEARCH D'D", results from the front page will be displayed under "Results". Matches for the forums will be under "Blog Search".
If you search in the forums, it will only search in the forums.
It's the nature of the beast and it is far from perfect. I am sure with effort and elbow grease, Morbid could force a fix. But given all he does, I think it's low on the list and can't blame him.
Even as it is, it sometimes doesn't work. Just do what you can. Use the least restrictive terms (like a last name or a city or weird word in it) and look at the last day or three of posts... no guarantee but better than nothing.
I get mortified when I find out I posted something that is already there... FP or forums... but try hard not to. Mortified only applies to me because most folks view it as a "tsk tsk" or "ooopsie!"... I don't care about anyone that says "stupid bitch, can't she read?". Most know I get lost in la-la land at times. Deal with it.
When I find an update to the FP, I post it if it is simple or PM the author (or Imp) if I think it deserves a "bit more" than a comment. I just use a "what I think" approach - which may or may not be appropriate. No big deal.
While this site runs as a good big time deal, it really does have an "as you like it' and "as it is" feel... so refreshing in many ways. There really is no wrong ... just "dammit it should be that way - but oh. well". If you want MSNBC reporting, go there.
I will now pretend to practice what I preach. Next double post I make, please feel free to laugh your ass off at me... although it will be an honest mistake or one borne of zeal. Whatever...

Every single one of us who has created a new thread has double-posted. (Alternately, if it hasn't happened to you yet, it will.)
But to everyone who is conscientious about it, thank you. Like some others here, I have a bit of the OCD and start twitching when there are double threads on a topic. If you see one that a mod hasn't caught yet, just let one of us know.
Meanwhile, I'll be looking for a chance to laugh my ass off at Dakota.

Can search be modified to locate a three letter word? I was searching for a name the other day, first and last name were only three letters.

I try not to search with a middle initial....that rarely gets me anywhere. I usually search with a first and last name, and then just the last name. I try not to put an initial in the title of my stories, but I use the initial (if there is one) in my tags.
