A Clermont woman was arrested yesterday and charged with felony child neglect after a police officer saw her ramming a moldy stroller holding a small boy against a gas station door.
Rachel Rizzo, 25, was charged with felony child neglect and retail theft. She was released from the Lake County Jail after posting $5,250 bail yesterday evening.
On Tuesday morning, a Clermont police officer saw Rizzo use the boy's stroller to try to push open a gas station door on SR-50. The officer said that Rizzo hit the door with her stroller several times, and that the boy almost fell out of the stroller, according to an arrest affidavit.
The officer also noted the boy's stroller was moldy, wet, and very dirty, and that the boy was not wearing enough clothing to keep him warm in the 60-degree weather, according to the affidavit.
According to the affidavit, Rizzo's eyes were bloodshot, and she appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Additional officers reported to the scene and had Rizzo begin a field sobriety test, which they discontinued after becoming concerned that she would hurt herself while performing it.
When the officers searched the boy's stroller, they found several cosmetics. They checked with the Dollar General across the street, and a clerk told them that she and her manager had caught Rizzo hiding merchandise in the stroller and had asked her to leave, but had given her a break by not calling police, according to the affidavit.
