Deputies arrested Robert D. Morris, 23, Tuesday at Salem Hospital, charging him with assaulting his 6-month-old boy.
Marion County sheriffs report that the child was brought into the hospital with injuries by family members on Monday.
Hospital personnel called sheriffs after they realized the baby's left arm had been broken about two months ago and had healed incorrectly.
The past injury, coupled with the serious condition the child was in when brought to the hospital, "set off an alarm" with medical staff, Lt. Sheila Lorance said.
The little boy was later transported to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland, where he was listed in critical condition as of 8:30 this morning.
"The child has life-threatening injuries," Lorance said.
Morris is married. Authorities say at the moment there is no indication his wife, whose name has not been released, will be charged.
Sheriffs confirmed that Morris had been convicted of third-degree rape involving a 15-year-old girl in 2007. He currently is serving probation for that conviction.
Lorance said Morris' wife and family have been cooperative in the investigation.
If the child dies the investigation would turn from assault and child abuse to homicide and Morris would be charged with murder, she said.
