NOVI, MI. -- Police have begun an international hunt for the 42-year-old husband and father of three victims all found brutally slain in their Novi town house on Monday.

The bodies of Jayalakshmi Nerusu, 37; her 14-year-old daughter, Tejasvi; and 12-year-old son, Siva, were found about 5 p.m. Monday on the first floor of their two-story town home on Wharton Court. Officers went to the home around noon after a brother-in-law of the victims reported he had not heard from the family in several days, police said.

"There was a significant amount of trauma to the head and neck areas of each victim," said Novi Police Chief David E. Molloy during a press conference Tuesday, in which he described the crime scene as "brutal" and "very disturbing."

Police want to talk to Lakshminivasa Rao Nerusu, whom Molloy described Tuesday as "a person of interest" in the investigation. Nerusu, an unemployed computer software programmer, had also been living at the address and his whereabouts are unknown.

Molloy said police have no record of police runs or domestic violence incidents regarding the Nerusu family and insisted Nerusu was only a "person of interest" at this time.

The three had defensive wounds on the arms and hands as if they attempted to fend off blows, Molloy said. Police reported "sharp-edged" weapons found at the scene that are believed to be the weapons used in the killings but would not elaborate.

"There was no sign of forced entry and the home was locked, so we believe they may have known the person who attacked them and that person locked the door afterwards," said Molloy.

Jayalakshmi Nerusu was a homemaker, Molloy said. Tejasvi was attending Walled Lake Western High and Siva, went to Geisler Middle School. Grief counselors and support staff were to be made available to students at both schools to assist in discussing the deaths.

The family has lived at other Novi addresses and in Texas and Illinois, Molloy said. The couple had been living in the town house since August and are natives of India, Molloy said.

Neighbor Amanda Costantino was shaken by the news. She moved into her home on Wharton this summer, adjacent to the row of well-kept town homes where the family lived. She takes little comfort in speculation that the victims were not randomly slain but likely knew their killer.

"Even if it (the person responsible) was someone living there, it's still pretty frightening to think something like that could happen right next to you," said Costantino, who didn't know the family.

Fellow neighbor Raida Karim said, "I'm shocked and amazed something like this has happened."

"It makes me sick to know someone would kill a mother and her children. I hope the police find whoever did this," Karim said from her doorway Tuesday.

Karim and other neighbors had to show identification to gain access to their homes Monday while police investigated, she said. The quiet street near 13 Mile and Novi Road, was blocked off while police questioned neighbors but provided little information about the incident.

The last slayings recorded in Novi were in 2003, when two people were killed, according to FBI crime statistics.

Molloy said Lakshminivasa Nerusu's vehicle was repossessed recently, and it is not known if he has obtained another vehicle. He is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall, with a thin build, dark hair and dark complexion.

"We are involving several police agencies -- local and federal including immigration (in searching for him)," said Molloy. "We are confident as this unfolds we will be able to find the person responsible."

Anyone with information regarding the family or who may have seen anything suspicious around the residence is asked to call police at (248) 348-7100.

Please tell me that this is not another so-called "honor" killing by some selfish prick who has not been doing so well financially lately.

I hope not. The police aren't saying anything yet. I'll never understand a religion that tells you to kill your family.
