Four months ago, Catrina Sandoval had to make a decision -- one that, as it turns out, came easy to the proud mother.
Her newborn daughter's name would be Nevaeh -- heaven spelled backward.
Four months later, however, Catrina Sandoval made another decision for the girl she calls her "angel from heaven" -- taking the infant off life support nearly two days after Greeley police arrested her husband, Edward Sandoval, in connection with abusing the child.
On Tuesday, Weld District Attorney's Office charged Nevaeh's father, Edward Sandoval, 24, with child abuse knowingly or recklessly causing death -- a felony.
The charge stems from an incident at about 1:30 a.m. Oct. 22 when Edward Sandoval called 9-1-1 to complain that Nevaeh was not breathing, according to Sgt. Joe Tymkowych, spokesman for the Greeley Police Department. The baby was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, where Tymkowych said hospital officials advised Greeley police the baby's injuries were consistent with that of shaken baby syndrome.
Weld County Coroner Chris Robillard said the baby died of blunt force injuries to the head, though the baby also could have been shaken.
Catrina Sandoval said she does not think her husband committed the crime, but he was the only adult at the house when the incident occurred, Tymkowych said. Catrina Sandoval was at work.
Edward Sandoval will be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 20 in Division 12 of the Weld County Courthouse, 9th Avenue and 10th Street in Greeley.
