Johnny Lee Ellis Jr. was suicidal. He had spent the weekend in Minneapolis with a friend and the friend's sister, crying and asking why bad things happened to him. The friend said he wanted to kill himself.
Go home, his friends urged him. Go home to Mounds View, they said, where he lived with his girlfriend, as well as her sister and her mother.
"He said, 'I can't talk to her ... I can't go home,' " said Edward, the friend, who asked that his last name not be used.
That home, it turned out, had been deathly silent for days.
"So he was trying to tell me, you know," Edward said. "He just couldn't get it out."
On Monday, the girlfriend and the two other women were found dead at the home.
On Tuesday, the 38-year-old Ellis was in the Ramsey County Jail, booked on suspicion of killing them. Charges are expected soon.
The three victims were identified as Ellis' girlfriend, Angela Lynn Vigen, 40; her 75-year-old mother, Jolyn Hazel Vigen; and her sister, Jennifer Gail Vigen, 35.
A relative called police after not hearing from the mother over the weekend. The elderly Vigen even had groceries delivered to the door, and her daughter Jennifer had Down syndrome, according to neighbors and a family friend.
Two of the victims were found about 12:30 p.m. Monday after a brief search of the home. A third body was found later behind a locked door in the basement after authorities obtained a search warrant.
