I can't wait for this! I wasn't crazy about Will Smith starring in this, but it looks like I may have to eat my words. I hope I do.

I'm still pretty skeptical. It looks like they strayed from the short story quite a bit. Plus it's Will Smith. I can't stand him as an actor.

My problem with Will Smith is hes been playing the Fresh Prince of Bel Air on almost every single movie hes done since he started his carrer.....

It doesnt mather how serious the character originaly should have been he always plays it and has the scripts previously tailored to play a suave guy that throws one liners in the most inapropiate and unrealistc times....

Judging by the trailer im sure it will be an ok movie but there will be parts where his stupid one liners and suave dudness will make me cringre.

this movie may be cooler than me....................maybe.

save the will smith hate, he is a good actor i think. of course there will be story deviations, its hollywood, but im hoping its still a good movie. my prediction is : it will fuck you in your ear-vaginas until you scream for death. I am Legend will be a legend, just like me.

I am cautiously looking forward to this one. I Am Legend is one of my favorite stories of all time, hands down. Matheson is a master of creepy stories and this is his masterpiece.

I hope it's good. It looks like it'll be better than Omega Man but I doubt it'll surpass The Last Man On Earth.

If Smith says something along the lines of "Aw, Hell No!" then I am leaving the theater and demanding my money back. There is no excuse for something like that.

You might want to stay home, then. That line has become the annual 4th-of-July mantra of movie-going. His "I'll be back", if you will.

Can someone who has read the book and seen this movie tell me if they think I should read the book first? I suspect I'll be getting the book for Xmas, but I REALLY want to see this. What should I do?

I don't really plan on seeing this in theaters. It's one of my favorite books ever, Omega Man is pretty good and I love The Last Man on Earth.

Is the movie going to ruin anything about the book? I guess that is a better question.

For the first time, I agreed completely with the worst review I read about this movie (Chicago Tribune, I think?).

Will Smith is fantastic, as always, but this movie definitely leaves something to be desired. A few somethings, actually. If you haven't seen it yet, wait for the rental, folks.

ZB,

I'd say to read the book first. The original story is one of the best I have ever read. Neville is a tragic character and his story is fantastic. If you want to see a good adaptation, then check out "The Last Man On Earth" with Vincent Price. So far, it's been the most faithful adaptation.

Just saw I Am Legend last night and I liked it BUT the coolest thing about the film was
during the film's opening minutes, the deserted New York City showcased in the film plays host to a giant Superman/Batman banner hanging on one of the vacated buildings. The banner shows one logo overlapping the other, with a release date for May, 2010.
I don't understand why no media outlets have commented on the poster in Times Square
with the Superman and Batman logos and the date 05-15-10 on it.
The same studio owns both franchises.????

A hint, Maybe?

Nevermind... I found this!
It's not an indication of anything - it's just an in-joke, because Akiva Goldsman (who wrote I Am Legend) was supposed to write a BvS movie at one point.

Still looked pretty cool!

I read the book a long time ago and loved it but I hadnt seen Last Man On Earth till recently that I got it it one of those cheap like 20 movies for five bucks packs, much closer to the book and an all around bether movie than Omega Man.

I would say the movie is 8yr old friendly. The gore is minimal (it's PG13, after all) and the movie is heavily CGI dependent. There's no awkward love scenes or anything, and it's fast-paced enough (mostly) to keep the little guy entertained.

But you're seeing the movie AFTER reading the book??? Way to ruin a movie for yourself, ZB. ;)

Personally, if a movie comes out before I've read the book, I always hold off on reading the book until after I've seen the movie. Movies never live up to my imagination, so they always disappoint if I've read the book first.

I saw it and thought it was poor. Will Smith is solid, but everything else falls flat. It might have suffered due to it's book success with the likes of movies such as the "28" series gathering momentum.
It's not scary or thought provoking.
A disappointment, yet I still want to read the book.

Will Smith is solid, but everything else falls flat.I concur, although I walked out of the theater shaking my head at my kid, who buried his head in the back of the seat any time the music changed tempo. "You'll watch Freddy movies and play Resident Evil 4 until the cows come home, but you're afraid of some cheesy mutants?!" He just shrugged and skipped away. Doof.

The ONLY similarities between the book and the movie is that the dude's name is Robert Neville and he is thought to be the last man on Earth. That's where the similarities end. Even their frames of mind are totally opposite. The bad-ass Robert Neville in the book would never chat up a fucking mannequin.

I gotta say - I never knew Will Smith could play up the crazy that well. You could almost feel the mania and desperation oozing from his pores. I also have to give props to whoever left the standard shit-ass "Fresh Prince" style one-liners out of the script. I was SO hoping there wasn't any of that, and to my refreshing surprise, there wasn't. Bravo!

A disappointment, yet I still want to read the book.It shouldn't be hard to find. My copy came from a teeny Ma-n-Pa bookstore in the middle of a tiny mountain town. Surely you can find it at some conglomerate.

Or I could send you my copy. It's a quick read. The paperback I got also has 10 of Matheson's short stories, but the few of those I've read SUCKED.

I just got back from the film about two or three minutes ago, and you pretty much mirrored my thoughts. I really liked the movie, I thought the ending was pretty much predictable (although I won't give out any spoilers for those who haven't)... but overall it worked really well. For a flick that is, at its core, a PG-13 Horror Movie.... it worked surprisingly well.

So does anyone know if this "controversial ending" is closer to that of the book? cuz that was my only major gripe with the film...The short answer to your question is no. The alternate ending is nothing like the ending in the book.

From Wikipedia:

The tone of the ending of the film was altered dramatically before the film's release, with the majority of the changes made to the standoff between Neville and the infected in his laboratory. Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs recounts the original ending starting with the standoff, "At that point, Neville's—and the audience's—assumptions about the nature of these creatures are shown to be incorrect. We see that they have actually retained some of their humanity. There is a very important moment between the alpha male and Neville." David Schaub stated, "Then, when Neville finally turns the alpha female over to the alpha male, there is this little love moment between the two of them." The infected then retrieve the captured female and spare Neville's life. The original final shot follows Neville, Anna, and the boy as they cross the remnants of the George Washington Bridge in hopes of finding other survivors. This ending will be used in the DVD release.

Yeah, sounds great! The thing I hated about the movie was when Will says they have lost all of their humanity but is not smart enough to see that the same Alpha guy is hunting him down because Will has his Girlfriend/sister/mother/whatever.
He sets traps for him... how could he not know this same Alpha fucker was chasing him for the Alpha chick!

I can't wait to see that ending!!! I told everyone I know... This was how I would have ended this movie why did they have to have such a GAY ending!? Still great movie, though!

I just watched this movie last night and I'm glad I've read about an alternate ending, because I was so pissed when Neville...Will Smith killed himself. I didn't see the movie ending that way. I saw it ending as described. It was a really good movie and I was totally caught up from the beginning...it left me with, what's going on? What's happening next? What the fuck was that? I'm glad I watched it and would definitely watch it again, especially now that I know about the other ending. I'd give this movie a firm 8/10.

So what do you guys think are the worst names for a movie sequel? My bottom picks go to

"I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" and "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer"

(not to mention the fact that "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is a horrible title, and film, to begin with!)

I also feel like we can't mention, DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD for not only being 100% pure shit but also having a horrid title.

I actually think the "When Harry met Loyd" bit was a good title, Im guessing the movie sucked dick, I had no dessire to watch that when it came out and certainly dont do now but the title is a good play of WHMS that actually exlpains the plot of the flick now the "Dumberer" thing yea, thats retarded...

I agree with what you posted on "The De2cent" tread about how retarded numbers for letters are, I think that one takes the cake for a stupid name...

"Leprechaun: Back in Da Hood", "NOES III: Dream Warriors" "Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs", "Batman: Forever?", "Grease 2: Son of Grease"(not widley used but an actyual title)...

Those are the ones I can think of rigth now, Tho am sure there are many waaay more retarded.

I own a copy of Leprechaun Back 2 Da Hood (there we go with that bullshit number shoved in the middle of a sentence again), it's entertaining (for all the wrong reasons). But still not as good as when he went into Space.... that's another topic for another post.

I always HATED the whole "AVP" name, not because I didn't like the movies (I did) but come on.... its Alien vs. Predator people.... AVP need not apply.

And I didn't even know they made a Grease 2, which is probably for the best.
