Day Care Provider Accused of Locking Kids in Shed

Guilford, Vermont - October 17, 2008

A Windham County day care provider is accused of locking infant children in a shed.

40-year-old Diane Wood runs Diane's Family Day Care in Guilford. Police say during a recent safety inspection by the state, inspectors heard voices coming from a garden shed. Inside they found two infants and two toddlers.

Wood allegedly confessed she locked them in there, because she was providing care for more children then her licensed allowed her too. She told Channel 3 News she is not a bad person, but was under a lot of stress and made a bad decision.

She is charged with child cruelty and unlawful restraint. Wood's day care license was also revoked.

That was both stupid and dangerous. I understand that she needed the money. But, she was endangering the children. It only takes a minute for a toddler or an infant to be injured when left together unsupervised. She doesn't need to be doing childcare and she certainly will NOT be licensed now. So she can just get a regular job now. If she's not in jail.

Laws are put into effect for a reason.
"Not a bad person", would have let inspectors see she had too many kids and give her a citation to comply.

Putting any child or baby at risk like that, denotes greed and she is a bad person for doing so.
