A Dutch couple, Rex Hofman (Gene Bervoets) and Saskia Wagter (Johanna ter Steege), are on a cycling holiday in France. As they are driving, Saskia tells Rex of a recurring dream that she had, in which she is drifting through space in a golden egg. She tells Rex that this time there was someone else in another golden egg, and that if they were to collide, everything would be over. she said that being stuck in the golden egg was terrifying lonliness. Their car runs out of gas and they are stranded inside a tunnel. They quarrel for a while, but make up and eventually get going again.
Later they stop at a gas station. Here Saskia goes into the shop for drinks and never returns. Rex waits, getting more worried and nervous by the minute as Saskia does not emerge. He soon starts to question people if they have seen her, but no one has any idea as to where she is. The only clue he has is a blurred photo he took of the surrounding area, in which he can just barely make out her red hair in a group of people next to the gas station entrance.

I didn't want to add any more from the synopsis, because it would ruin it.

Has anyone else seen this? I just saw it and I was floored. Amazing film. I don't think I'll be watching the American Remake from 1990 though.

The 1988 version hasn't come out on NetFlix yet....Darn!
Well, I saved it and hope they get it in soon!

Good luck dude. I'd see if you could at least get it used. It truly is that amazing. I'm still in shock of what I saw. Yes, you know where it's going to end from the beginning of the film, but you pray to God it won't.

You are a tease!
I'll look on Amazon tonight and see if my favorite dvd place has it.
From what you are saying, I don't think I'll just watch it once.

Usually, this kind of film I can only watch once. But, there's so many nuances that I really need to see it again.

God I LOVE this movie! It's hypnotic and very profound. I really loved the 1993 remake with Kiefer Sutherland too!

You would really be missing out if you bypassed the remake! It's a fantastic movie and just as chilling.

If that's the case...I'll check it out. I was so floored by the original that I feel that it just can't live up to it. But, who knows, maybe I'll like it.

Glad a bunch of people have seen this.

It's too bad more people haven't seen it. Great film.

Hmmmm....I'm wondering why many are saying the remake came out in '90? Did Wiki list the year wrong? It was '93!

The remake is a great movie too, both films are different in feel. Different but both awesome!

I think I may have gotten it from a wrong source. '93 it is.

I haven't seen the original yet but I have seen the remake and it was excellent. I didn't know it was a remake when I saw it and haven't had a chance to watch the original since i found out.

You owe it to yourself. I'll be checking out the remake due to the recommendations, but the original left my jaw on the floor. When I think about it now my heart still skips a beat.

i have seen the one with Keifer Sutherland, and i thought it was good. very twisted. i wouldn't mind seeing the original. seeing how good the remake was just makes me want to see the original all the more. ;-)

Here's the deal: The Vanishing, or Spoorloos (real title) is one of the best thrillers ever made. Period. Write that shit down, quote me on it.

Spoorloos is one of those films that truly affected me. I saw it years after seeing the remake (a great film itself), and I knew pretty much what was coming. That being said, the ending of this film will leave you with chills. It's a rare film that actually frightens the audience and at the same time makes you like the antagonist. I cannot recommend this film enough, it's one that EVERYONE should see. An essential film in my opinion.
