COOKS FALLS — Police on Wednesday found the body of a roughly 100-year-old woman inside a freezer at a home in Cooks Falls, a hamlet in Delaware County just beyond Roscoe, state police said.
The body of Herta Auslander was found Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.
Police have been unable to determine a cause of death; they must wait for the body to thaw out before performing an autopsy, State Police Senior Inv. Les Hyman said. It’s unclear whether foul play was involved.
Police are searching for Auslander’s son, Roland J. Auslander, 69, who was allegedly collecting his mother’s social security checks and cashing them while she was in the freezer.
Police say bank employees tipped them off when they noticed that the checks kept coming in but she was never seen. Police say Auslander had a rubber stamp made up of his mom's signature.
Police said the search for Auslander is not a manhunt, but “We’d certainly like to talk to him,” Hyman said.

I'm thinking she probably died of natural causes and he wasn't quite ready to exit the gravy train yet....

Roland "Jack" Auslander, 69, who has been out on bail, was accused of freezing his mother for at least 18 months in his Delaware County home while he continued to withdraw money from her checking account at a bank in Roscoe. The bank received her Social Security checks automatically because she was never reported dead.
He pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree grand larceny and three forgery counts in Sullivan County. There's been no plea offer and Auslander could be sentenced to a maximum of up to seven years. Judge Frank LaBuda indicated in open court, however, that he's inclined to sentence Auslander to six months in jail and five years probation because Auslander has grave health issues.
District Attorney Steve Lungen said he will argue for prison time at the Oct. 15 sentencing because of the "egregious" nature of the crimes and Auslander's extensive criminal history. He's been arrested 22 times and convicted of six crimes, including one felony.
[...]
Auslander will also be required to pay back money owed to the Social Security Administration.
When questioned what he did for a living, Auslander indicated he rescues animals and grows vegetables. He and his attorney, Gerry Orseck, had no comment after the plea. Auslander will remain free until sentencing.
[...]
Auslander still faces a charge of unlawful disposal of a body, a violation, in Delaware County.http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090718/NEWS/907180317
