A Greenwood woman was charged on Wednesday, after a family member says she tried to smother her infant child.
Adaia Lashon Brown, 20, of 110 McQuay Court in Greenwood is facing charges of assault and battery, assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, assault and battery of a police officer and resisting arrest.
Greenwood City Police report responding to a call on Wednesday at a Phoenix Street address after a woman called advising them that Brown had attempted to smother her infant child.
The women told police that Brown was visiting her home. She said that Brown was sitting on the couch when she observed Brown holding a folded blanket over the baby’s face. The woman told police she asked Brown what she was doing, but Brown allegedly pushed the blanket further into the child’s face and chanted “die, die, die”.
Brown allegedly told the child’s mother that she could “do it” in the house or she was going into the woods to “do it.”
The mother stated to police that the child has a medical condition and has a feeding tube placed in her stomach which requires electric monitoring.
According to reports, the mother said she lifted the child from the baby seat where she was sitting when Brown grabbed the child by the stomach attempting to take the baby away from the woman.
Incident reports state that Brown left the home but later returned and allegedly unplugged the baby’s stomach monitor, attempted to take the child and leave. The child’s mother said that she placed the baby back into its seat and re-attached the monitor but that Brown then grabbed another blanket and placed it over the child’s face, attempting to smother the child.
Police say that the mother pushed Brown away from the child, when Brown allegedly attacked her.
Police report that when they arrived to the residence they found the two women fighting. Police say when they attempted to handcuff Brown, she resisted, continuing to pull the woman’s hair.
Brown was arrested and transported to the Greenwood County Detention Center. According to incident reports, when police arrived at the detention center with Brown, she allegedly began shouting and refused to cooperate with detention center personnel. Reports say that while detention center personnel attempted to place Brown in a restraint chair she allegedly spit at them and kicked a city police officer in the chest.
The infant child was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation, where doctors reported low oxygen levels.
