New York State Police say a University of Rochester graduate student and instructor had some of the "most disturbing and graphic" examples of child pornography on his computer that investigators had ever encountered.

Gilbert Kirton, 26, now faces one charge of possession of obscene sexual performance by a child; investigators say more charges, perhaps from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, are pending.

Kirton, a member of the UR’s English Department staff before being placed on suspension last week, was working toward a PhD and taught courses related to sexual expression in literature and media. His university biography also listed "aberrant sexuality and behavior" among his research interests.

Investigators traced more than 10,000 images and 140 movies to Kirton’s personal computer.

"When you have investigators that have been doing this for 25 and 30 years and (they) say that this is the worst that they've seen, that certainly speaks volumes, I think," State Police Captain Scott Crosier said.

State Police said a tip from authorities in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania led them to trace the pornographic material to an IP address registered in the Goler House, a UR residency hall.

From there, a four-month investigation centered on Kirton. At one point, investigators said, they interviewed one of Kirton’s supervisors, a director of graduate studies at the university. State Police said Kirton later admitted that this supervisor (Professor Thomas Hahn) tipped him off to the investigation of "inappropriate internet use."" (Maybe they should be checking Professor Hahn's computer as well.)

Yeah....actually doing "research" I suppose. Well, you KNOW he'll claim that in defense. But I think maybe 100 images is suitable for research, NOT thousands. And they DO need to investigate the professor who tipped him off.
