A Lincoln man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree murder after he reportedly relieved himself in the lobby of a large Lincoln insurance and financial firm.
Police later found the man's mother dead at her home near 84th and A Streets.
Eric Brox, 52, was arrested at Ameritas Group, 5900 O St., after witnesses said he was urinating in the lobby. Police took him to St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center to be treated for possible mental-health issues. Once there, police said, Brox made disturbing statements that led officers to believe that he had harmed his mother.
Officers then went to the home of Zoe Brox, 72, to check on her welfare, police said. They found her dead in the garage, and they say she appeared to have been slain.
Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady said Lincoln police had contacted Zoe Brox on Sunday night after learning that Eric Brox was trying to fix a broken-down vehicle in Kansas' rural Marshall County near the Nebraska border.
A saw stained with blood and some articles of women's clothing were located in Brox's car, Casady said. Eric Brox also had a cut on his hand, the chief said.
Zoe Brox told Lincoln police that she had no idea why her son was near the Kansas-Nebraska border, but said she was concerned about him, Casady said.
When he was arrested on Wednesday, Brox had his mother's maroon 1988 Cadillac DeVille and financial documents, police said.
Brox, who is being held in the Lancaster County Jail, has a history of mental-health issues, Casady said. "It's a little odd that he hasn't had any contact with us since 2002," he said.
On May 1, 2002, police said, Brox entered CD Warehouse, located at 51st and O Streets in Lincoln, and placed a knife on the counter while singing, "It cuts like a knife." Brox stood in the back of the store with a flashlight and made offensive statements about an Asian customer, police said. Brox was cited on suspicion of disturbing the peace.
