View Full Version : The PSP and the DS Lite

Dear gods! The Sony PSP has now outsold every other console in Japan for two weeks in a row! This is the land of the DS, the handheld that has dominated sales charts for years now. But the new PSP Slim and Lite, and the great game library, have resulted in a new leader.

(The PSP sold 128,000 in comparison to the DS' 72,000 units, a pretty large margin)

I have spent more time with my PSP over the last year than with any other console. It isn't just a road-trip system for me. I sit around the house, on the porch, in bed, in front of the TV, in the powder room, anywhere I can get a few minutes. The great thing about handhelds is that they cater to the adult lifestyle. You don't have 6-hour chunks of time to invest into major games anymore. You want something you can play for an hour, tops, but mostly for smaller segments of time. The DS and PSP are great for this, and this thread tells you what you need to know to get started with either one.

PSP

Today is the first day that you can probably go into a store and buy the new PSP Slim and Lite as a standalone unit. Previously it has been in a bundle of things you don't need. Get one for $169.99 and grab yourself a Pro Duo Memory Card. I prefer the Sandisk Ultra II 4GB card, but that's because I play all my games as backups. I purchase the UMD, and never even put it in my PSP, and we'll get to why that is in a moment...

Another accessory that I can't recommend highly enough is the Invisishield (http://www.shieldzone.com/item_description/SONPSPSLF.html). This is a clear piece of plastic that you apply to the entire face of the PSP by first spritzing it with water, then using the supplies squeegie to adhere it on. It sounds weird, but when you see what one does, you will get one of these for every device you own. It is like rubber armor that makes the screen quality go UP!

Even with this nifty screen, I still recommend a case. There are several quality ones to choose from.

Now you need to hack your PSP. This will require a friend who has an old "phat" PSP that is already hacked. They will transform a battery and memory stick for you that will load Dark Alex's custom firmware onto the PSP. The custom firmware has all the Sony functions, and then some. You can play homebrew, emulate almost all older systems, play backups of your ISO (and they will load SOOOOO much faster and you can have several with you at once), plus much more.

Now you need to get the best games for the system. I recommend:

Jeane d'Arc (GOTY for me)
Final Fantasy Tactics (recent review said it was reason enough to buy a PSP)
Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (9.5/10 from IGN this week)
Hot Shots Golf
LocoRoco
Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters
PuzzleQuest
Dungeons and Dragons Tactics (classic turn-based RPG, just like the pen-and-paper days)
Coded Arms: Contagion (mindless fun, got bad reviews, but I am loving it)
The two GTA games are great, Vice City and Liberty City Stories
God of War will be here in early 2008

DS

The DS is still ultra-popular, but the number of quality games has slacked off a bit. The latest Zelda is out, and is a BLAST, and Dragon Quest IX is coming soon. To get going with a DS, all you need to buy is a CycloDS (http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/nds-cevo). It is the Bee's Knees of DS homebrew. It lets you do EVERYTHING, and it requires no bizarre hacking, like other solutions. When I hacked my DS, I had to roll up some tinfoil like a joint, bend it in half, and stick it in two holes in the back of my DS, and if I hit the wrong contacts, I would brick the thing. Those days are over with the CycloDS. Pop it in, drag and drop your ROM's, MP3's, homebrew, e-books, etc... That's it. Once you get it going, check out:

The New Super Mario Bros.
Mario Cart DS
Trueswing Golf
PuzzleQuest
Final Fantasy III remake
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
BrainAge (I and II)
Advance Wars Dual Strike (and AW2 is coming soon!!!)
SimCity DS

There you go, I hope I get you guys interested in either or both of these systems. If you need help, post here or check out my favorite site for all things console and homebrew, MaxConsole (http://forums.maxconsole.net/).

I bought Phantom Hourglass on my lunch break today. I can't wait to get home and play it.

What?! You can't be surprised that I would have a DS. I got it about a month ago by trading in a shitload of games at EB Games. It came bundled with Brain Age 2, which gets old really quickly. I also have Mario Kart DS and we have Pokemon Ranger, but I've never played it. The kids keep losing the fucking styluses though. Infuriating.

My contact with a PSP is limited to the teeny bit I played on Stoney's when they were here last October. It's neat, but a little too rich for my white-trash blood.

Phantom Hourglass ROCKS. I played it in bed for two hours last night and am about to go play a little more. It takes me awhile to settle into the shitty DS graphics, but once I get used to the, it is like playing Metroid on the Wii, you just enjoy the game mechanics.

It is nice to get the dust off my DS, but I will be hurrying through this game to get to FF Tactics on the PSP. It is getting outstanding reviews.

I categorically refuse to let my children play the DS anymore. There are scratches and little dents on the touchscreen, and now I can't get Link to walk to the left. I am fucking LIVID. I'm now going to have to send it back to Nintendo and have it repaired for $75.00 plus $7.50 shipping! LIVID. :diablo:

I can not stress heavily enough how great the Invisishield product is. You must get one for your replacement DS. I have one on my DS, and both of my PSP's, and they are worth every penny. This is not like a stick-on plastic shield like you see everywhere else, it is a rubber-like film that is squeegied on with water (you let it dry 24 hours before powering up again, and I remove the battery first). Seriously, the end result is just amazing. You can rub a nail over the screen and not mar it. And it makes the screens look BRIGHTER, not worse.

Order one now, before you even send the DS back. You'll be glad you did.

swivel, the company you lined the CycloDS from no longer sells the product (of course, they have my money and informed me that a refund will take a week...we will see).

Anyway, is there any way you could check and see if Easybuy2000 sells this same hardware? I have ordered stuff from them before with no issues. I would check myself, but my firewall at work blocks all that stuff.

Hmmm. Wonder if that has anything to do with the big modchip shake-down that recently took place? Very strange that they still have them listed on the webpage.

I don't see the CycloDS on Easybuy2000's site. They don't have anything DS-related at all. More older stuff, like Gamecube, PS2, and XBox.

I checked the official website of CycloDS (http://www.cyclopsds.com/cgi-bin/cyclods/engine.pl?page=wheretobuy)

And they have Divineo at the top. The only other websites they list for the US are:

http://www.mod-chip.com/index-cart-us.php?go=en/select_nintendo.htm (Back Order: ETA October 18th)
http://www.realhotstuff.com/cyclods-c-61.html (Out of Stock)

Looks like everyone else wants one of these as well. Wonder if I should get one and set my G6 Lite aside...

Edit: Don't worry about your refund. I have had a half-dozen transactions with Divineo and they are the tops for this type of stuff. Very reliable.

Second Edit: From the official CycloDS site: Due to the huge demand for CycloDS Evolution, we regretfully announce that the second batch has already sold out. Production for the next batch is underway, and we expect to resume shipping in 2-3 weeks. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

I'm the opposite of most when it comes to the DS. I waited until the Lite was released and picked it up along with New SMB. I was in love with it until NSMB ended and am now feeling a good bit of buyer's remorse.

My problem with the DS is that it's all kiddie games. Sure, Phantom Hourglass just came out, and I have yet to try it. I'm hoping it'll make me remove the layer of dust off of my DS and start playing it again.

Aside from NSMB, Advance Wars DS, and Elite Beat Agents I have yet to find a good game for the system. They are either way too "cute" or have terrible controls/graphics.

I still have yet to pick up a PSP. I'm not a big fan of Sony's electronics after my previous experience with the PS2.

I agree with Mr. Vindictive. Advance Wars and NSMB were killer games that got me excited, and my DS has gathered dust otherwise. I can't even finish the Zelda game because there is a great game coming out on the PSP every week.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I fucking LOVE Nintendo. They are tops in customer service. I called them because of my touchscreen problems, as it says to do on their site, and because I am a loyal Nintendo customer and always register my products (GC, DS, GBA, N64 and Wii, in addition to oodles of games), they knocked off 21 bucks and are paying for shipping both ways. To repair or replace my DS, I only have to pay $54.00 as opposed to the usual $75! Schweet! Loyalty pays!

Every time my Maui Jim's get a little scratched up I mail them back to HQ and they send me a brand-new pair with no charge whatsoever.

Nintendo is raping you and you are squealing in delight.

(Can I get Mapquest directions to your house?)

Here's what Nintendo does:

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/5695/nintendodsliteviewangletk4.jpg

On the left is the new DS Lite, on the right is one of the older ones. They are putting cheaper screens in to stuff their pockets. And they are the only company to not lower the price of their consoles after a year of release. This is after the original Wii price being $50 more than analysts expected (and was warranted due to man. costs)

Nintendo is the Apple of Gaming. Overpriced, overhyped, undersupported, egotistical, undeserving.

A "little scratched up" is one thing, but my toddler blatantly defiled the fucking thing. Should I expect Nintendo to foot the whole bill for my negligence?! If he had shoved a grilled cheese sammidge into a VCR, Sony would tell me that I'm shit out of luck and had to buy a new one, as would most other companies. I was destined to pay for this shit one way or the other. So I'm paying a little less. Every little bit helps.

And as far as the brightness of the screens - since you can't set the brightness level on the fucking thing to begin with and the battery drains hella-fast, perhaps this is not a bad thing.

Nintendo is the Apple of Gaming. Overpriced, overhyped, undersupported, egotistical, undeserving.Forgive me for not wanting to pay $600.00 for a console that dies within 6 months. I have unequivocably been satisfied with every Nintendo purchase I've ever made. Built to last. This is the first time I've EVER had to send anything back to them because it broke. And it broke because I trusted that my kid knew not to WWF the fucking thing. Guess I was wrong...

(Mapquest directions are on the way to your PM box )

There are a few DS games that I'm really looking forward to.

Advance Wars 2
Panzer Tactics
Dragon Quest IX

However, I just read a rumor that DQ IX is in secret development for the PSP, so I'll get it for that system instead.

Still, there are about a dozen games on each of my other platforms to look forward to, so these are paltry offerings. 99% of the games for the Wii and DS are just laughably bad. The input dynamics are novel and interesting for awhile, but the libraries just aren't there.

The GB and GBA had better games than the DS. And we haven't seen a Nintendo library flesh out since the SNES, arguably the greatest system in history from a game-library standpoint. Only the PS2 and PS1 come close to rivaling it. Since then, the N64 had about 12 good games, and the Gamecube almost that many. Sad.

When I received my DS back from Nintendo (United Radio in Albany NY, to be exact) a few moons ago, the touch-screen had some weird flashing issue whenever you paused a game. Since I was so happy to have my DS back, I overlooked it, thinking that it may have just been something that would correct itself with time. The more it was played, the lighter the touch-screen became - to the point where you could barely see what was on it. The flashing problem stopped, but the lightness got worse. It wasn't a problem when you first turned the unit on, but after a few minutes, it was unbearable. Since we'd gotten a whole plethora of new DS games for Christmas, this was not good. I had even bought the screen protectors that swivel suggested, but still!

Because I am a passive-aggressive weenie, I didn't want to call Nintendo and tell them that they fixed my junk with second-rate shit, but after a week or so of frustrated cursing and hubby pestering me about it, I fired off a grouchy email to Nintendo, which was met with a suggestion to call call customer service and explain the problem. Eventually I did. They apologized profusely - almost nauseatingly; he told me to send the unit back and they would fix it post-haste, and since the repair was still under warranty, I didn't have to pay for a thing. I shipped that shit on Jan. 24th. I got my baby back today.

Wait. WHAAAA?! Damn. Ummmm. That is, uhhh. Awfully SHINY!

That's right. They sent me a brand-spanking new DS. Same black/red unit too! It is so perfect and shiny that every time I pick that bitch up to play it, I get entranced by it's flawlessness. The serene, mirror effect of both screens. The lack of fingerprint smudges and scuffs on the outside. The sheer, unmarred beauty is a sight to behold.

God bless you, Nintendo. God bless you.

Awesome news! Have you thought about the new Advance Wars game? I really enjoyed it. Still have some bonus missions to do, but played through the campaign once. Very challenging, but rewarding.
