Aaron I. Blackshear, of the 400 block of Filmore Court in the Stoneybrook Apartments, was charged with one count of felony assault by abuse or neglect.
Officers were alerted by a social worker at the A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, who notified the state Division of Family Services of a child-abuse case involving a 2-month-old girl having difficulty breathing who was brought to the hospital's emergency room Sunday, according to court records.
A CT scan and skeletal exam revealed the infant was suffering from a severe brain injury, retinal hemorrhaging, a fractured hand, fractures to both thigh bones and a fractured left leg.
Investigators interviewed the baby's father, who was her primary caregiver, and he told them that "he could not think of any occurrences where his daughter would have sustained these types of injuries."
Blackshear later acknowledged that during the past two months "he had shaken the child several times," police said.
During the week of Sept. 22-26, he said, he tossed his daughter from a bed to the hardwood floor and also shook her, police said in court records.
He was committed to Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $30,000 cash bail pending a court hearing.
