PORT ST. LUCIE — A 22-year-old mother was arrested Tuesday after her 1-year-old son was found wandering in traffic while she napped after drinking, according to an arrest affidavit released Wednesday.
Cynthia R. McCowan, of the 400 block of Southwest Prima Vista Boulevard, faces a child neglect charge after a motorist spotted the boy about 5 p.m. walking east in a Prima Vista Boulevard "safety lane," the affidavit states.
The motorist, a woman identified in the report by her initials, told St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office investigators that the child "walked through the center lanes of traffic," the affidavit states. The motorist picked up the child, pulled in a driveway and notified authorities.
A deputy found small toys in the yard where the motorist pulled in and saw two of the house's doors open. Loud music was playing by a door, and investigators found a woman in an apparent "altered state" on the living room floor. They tried talking to her but she didn't answer.
Deputies found McCowan face down on a bed in the rear bedroom. She said she thought her son was with the woman in the living room. McCowan said she'd been drinking earlier and was taking a nap. She didn't know the boy "had walked out of the residence and into traffic."
