A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly beat, stabbed and may have tried to castrate a young man whom he suspected of having an affair with his wife.

Deputy Robert McClain, 34, is also suspected of assaulting his wife after confronting her about the alleged affair, law enforcement sources said.

Police responding to a call discovered the male victim, bleeding and unconscious, in the leasing office of an Irvine apartment complex about 7:30 a.m., said Irvine Police Lt. Rick Handfield. As detectives began to investigate, they learned that a female friend of the 23-year-old victim had driven herself to a local hospital for undisclosed injuries the same morning. Police said the woman was identified as McClain's wife.

In addition to attempted murder, McClain was expected to be charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence, authorities said.

Police declined to release detailed information about the nature of the victims' injuries, beyond saying that the young man had been "cut with a sharp instrument." But one law enforcement source said the assailant had attempted to castrate the 23-year-old male, whom The Times is not identifying because of the nature of his injuries. Another law enforcement source confirmed that the victim had cuts to the area around his groin. He was listed in stable condition.

Nancy Smith said her brother, the young man's father, was told by an emergency room nurse that a castration attempt had been made.

She said the nurse warned the father that his son had been beaten so badly that "you won't recognize him."

I can understand his hurt, anger, rage, depression, denial, and even revenge. But I think he took it way too far. To leave someone for dead instead of just getting a few licks in is going way too far.

Makes you wonder if the reason she was cheating on the hubby was because he was abusing her prior to this. They did say she was admitted to a hospital. I'm wondering if he hurt her even before he found out about her cheating. Usually in a situation like this, there's a reason for a woman to stray that far from her man.

Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said Tuesday that there were puncture marks near the victim's groin, but stressed that "any characterization of an attempted castration is way exaggerated."

Prosecutors release chilling details about the Sunday night attack, alleging that Deputy Robert A. McClain ordered his wife to castrate her lover.

After tricking his wife into introducing him to her lover, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy held the couple captive overnight at an Irvine apartment complex where he beat them, forced them to undress at knife point and ordered the woman to castrate her younger suitor, authorities alleged Wednesday.

Deputy Robert A. McClain then allegedly sodomized his wife and chopped off her hair with the knife, Orange County prosecutors said as they announced the filing of mayhem, torture and sexual assault charges against the 34-year-old ex-Marine, who faces a potential life sentence if convicted.

Prosecutors said the nine-hour ordeal began about 10 p.m. Sunday when McClain's wife told him she was leaving him for the younger man, whom she met while working in the leasing office of the apartment complex where he lives.

McClain then used a ruse to persuade his 31-year-old wife to introduce him to the 23-year-old man, said Susan Kang Schroeder, a spokeswoman for Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas.

After arriving at the young man's apartment, the deputy led the victims to a back kitchenette area in the nearby leasing office, where he started to argue with them and attack them, authorities said.

"McClain is accused of taking out a knife and forcing both victims to undress," according to the district attorney's statement. McClain, who also disrobed, "is accused of unsuccessfully ordering [his wife] to orally copulate both him and [the other man]," the statement added.

McClain then ordered his wife to castrate the younger man, and she "fearfully pretended to follow his instructions," the statement said. Schroeder said there were several puncture wounds in the man's groin area, including on his testicles.

After slashing the man's face with the knife, prosecutors said, McClain fled the scene, forcing his wife to go with him.

McClain then forcibly sodomized his wife, chopped off her hair with the knife, and ultimately drove her back to their Irvine home, prosecutors allege. About 5 a.m. Monday, the wife was able to leave the house with her four children and drive to a nearby hospital to get treatment, authorities said.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A judge has raised bail to $5 million for a former Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy accused of sexually assaulting his wife and torturing her lover after she threatened to leave him.

Robert Avery McClain, 34, of Irvine was charged in Orange County Superior Court with aggravated mayhem, torture and sodomy. If convicted, he faces a possible life sentence.

Bail was increased Thursday from $1 million to $5 million. The judge also issued a protective custody order that bars McClain from contacting either of the two victims. He is scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 17.

Prosecutors said McClain punched and kicked the couple on Sunday night after meeting them at the boyfriend's apartment complex. McClain is accused of cutting the man's face with a knife, forcing the couple to undress and ordered his wife to castrate her lover.

After she pretended to do so, McClain then allegedly sodomized her, chopped off her hair with the knife and brought her to their home. She escaped with their four children the next day.

The male victim was found early Monday by a cleaning crew and was hospitalized in a coma. He is expected to survive.

McClain's uncle, Charles McClain, told the Orange County Register he talked to his nephew from jail earlier this week and that the younger McClain had said he was attacked by his wife's suitor.

Charles McClain also said that his nephew told him his wife had cheated on him and that the two were planning to separate.

"He was planning on finding a place and moving out," Charles McClain said. "Robert is a real good father, and he didn't feel his wife was acting in an appropriate manner, especially since she's a mother."

McClain, who served as a sheriff's deputy for 10 months, resigned Wednesday before the Sheriff's Department could formally terminate him.
