Heather Hurt
UNION, S.C. -- A pregnant mother of three was arrested after school officials said that they found bruises on her 7-year-old daughter.
The Department of Social Service called officers to meet them at Foster Park School on Arthur Boulevard in Union on Sept. 16 after a teacher reported that the child had several bruises on her back, lower legs, right upper arm and neck.
The girl told officers that her mother, 31-year-old Heather Hurt, had grabbed her by the back of the neck, pushed her onto a bed and beat her with a belt.
After Hurt and officers met with Department of Social Services agents at the school, her three children were turned over to their father.
Following an investigation, Hurt was charged with cruelty to children and released on Monday.
Investigators said that such incidents are dealt with on a case by case basis, and in this case, because the injuries were in several locations on the child's body and seemed "excessive," they believe it was a case of "punishment gone too far."
