Independence, MO -

A mother and her boyfriend are under arrest in the death of their one-year-old son, who slowly died over a two week period.

Prosecutors said the one-year-old suffered from malnutrition, a broken arm, fractured skull and ribs and a severed tongue. Police said the baby had been dead for at least five hours before police arrived.

The baby was found dead on Friday...

The mother, Kimberly Helmes, 21, and boyfriend, Kyle W. Cooper, 25, were arrested on the scene.

Both were charged with second degree murder and endangering the welfare of a child. Helmes told detectives her son had been beaten most recently on Labor Day.

Prosecutors said the abuse was ongoing. The mother knew Cooper was a danger to the children and did nothing to stop the abuse. The couple was living with the boyfriend's parents. And, prosecutors said the abuse investigation is ongoing.

A second child, a two-year old boy, was [examined and] taken to a safe place by the Children's Division.

At one point, the children had been removed from the mother's custody for four days under suspicion of child abuse.

...

The prosecutor also said it appears the mother's first inclination was to cover up the protect the abuser.

How tragic. What do you bet that drugs were involved? *gasp* These two losers look like meth heads to me. Those poor children. That poor little one-year-old little boy- he didn't deserve to go through that. A fucking "severed tongue"?

I hope those two fry. Burn, baby burn! Does Missouri have the death penalty?

OMFG- "If we had to do it all over again, I wish that the children had not been returned to the mother," Prosecutor Jim Kantazar said. That could be the understatement of the year!

Why didn't they use a gun instead of a camera on these two who are a waste of space?
Would have saved a bundle in court costs and lawyer costs on the tax payers of that state.

I apologize for being ignorant, but I'm not a mom--how many of their own teeth do 1-year-olds have?

Given that being a 1yr old covers from 12mo to 24, the kid might have anywhere from none to 20 teeth. Almost all will at least have the front 4 though, so my best guess for that tongue severing without any other information would be that during an accident or beating he bit the tip off. But that would have to be a heckuva jaw snap. I sure hope it's not even more horrific than that.

Our local news reported tonight that the baby's tongue was severed in a forked manner.

Put in protective care for four lousy days. Those poor kids. The system is broken. BROKEN.

When my son was a year old, he had 6 teeth....4 on top, 2 on the bottom. He was pushing his Tonka truck around the living room one night. The Tonka truck came to a stop at the couch but he continued with forward movement. He bashed his chin into the truck and bit a hole completely through his tongue. I fuckin freaked! I had never seen so much blood come out of a kids face before. And he screamed......for hours, he screamed. He was screaming his little head off when we were in the ER and he was screaming his little head off after we left the ER. I cannot imagine a child having their tongue severed. I have tried to imagine it happening, my brain won't allow it.

On another, funnier note, he would stick his finger into the hole in his tongue for weeks afterward. Just cause he figured out that it really grossed me out. It never completely healed....if he ever decides to get a tongue piercing, he's already half-way there.

The 1-year-old was found dead at the couple's home Friday. Prosecutors say his injuries included a deep cut that covered about half the boy's tongue. Evidence indicated the couple had tried to sew the tongue back together.

WHY did children services even return these children???

MOTHER??? This fucking bitch is NOT a mother. She's a breeder, period.

Both of them look like fucking losers to start with. Boy, I can really see why she simply couldn't part with that fuckmoot.

I hope both get life in prison without parole. Maybe he can figure out how to hit something besides a small child. But he looks like a fucking whiny ass pussy. Yeah, he'll definately be someones bitch! And I can't fucking wait!

Usually 4-8. The back ones grow in last. Since those do the most damage if you bite your tongue, how the FUCK did the baby get a severed tongue???

But police investigating the death saw signs that the baby had been dead for some time. A crime scene investigator discovered that the boy’s tongue had been split from a severe, vertical laceration, and it appeared someone had tried to stitch it together with thread.

The investigator went back to Helmes, who changed her story. She had put her son down at 9 a.m. but didn’t notice that he wasn’t breathing until 6 p.m., she allegedly told investigators.

What about the tongue injury?

The baby fell in the garage and bit his tongue, she said. Later that night, she and Cooper attempted to stitch the wound using a needle and thread but were unsuccessful, Helmes told police.

For over a week, she said, her son was not eating well. He had a fever, and he was “cranky” and not breathing well. She was afraid to take him to the hospital out of fear that officials would take her children away.

In another room, Cooper told police the two didn’t take the boy to the hospital because they didn’t have a car.
When detectives interviewed Helmes again, court documents show, she broke into tears and said, “He killed my son.”

Then she allegedly told police that she had seen Cooper hit and kick her sons, and regularly abuse them. She told police that injuries including a broken arm and the split tongue occurred on Labor Day when Cooper assaulted the boy.

According to court documents, Helmes told police that her sons were taken into protective custody in May while children’s services workers investigated “excessive bruising” to her 2-year-old son. The boys were returned four days later, Helmes told police.
According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, Cooper was in prison from December 2005 to Aug. 29, 2007, after his probation was revoked from a September 2003 conviction for leaving the scene of an accident.

Since his release, he had been assigned to a parole officer in Independence.

According to a Jackson County Circuit Court database, Cooper pleaded guilty in August 2005 to three county charges involving a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and a weapon.

He also pleaded guilty in 2001 to stealing and was given two years probation. But that probation was revoked in May 2002, and he was ordered to serve 30 days in the county jail.

The court database also indicated that multiple protection orders had been sought against Cooper.

These people look like the losers they are. They let that poor child suffer - GOD, it isn't right.
Where were his parents during all this? I thought they lived with them? How could they fail to notice something was wrong with the child? Did I miss it in the article, what exactly did the child die from? Infection?

Ok then. My daughter had almost all of her teeth at the age of one. She was born with her front 4 almost all the way out already. She was also about 3 weeks overdue.

Severed tongue, and tried to sew it back together. I am positive they didn't use pain killers. That is a horrible thing to do to a kid. There is zero excuse for this!
