A man brandishing a wooden gun replica was able to hold a burglary suspect at bay until deputies arrived on Saturday.

Gary Uptain told deputies he had been in his home long enough to shower after working on his cars when he heard a noise outside. Uptain heard a neighbor’s dog barking uncontrollably over his monitoring system. As he walked out the door to investigate, family members said Uptain grabbed the wooden replica.
Once outside, Uptain told deputies, he saw two people in his 1988 Honda Accord. One person reportedly ran off, but the other obeyed Uptain’s commands to get on the ground and stay there.
After deputies arrived, Uptain went though [his cars] to determine what was missing or damaged. He told deputies it appeared the suspects had rummaged through the glove compartments and unsuccessfully tried to remove the radios from the cars.
The man who had been lying on the ground at Uptain’s commands was identified as Michael Schurley, 20, of...Interlachen. He was arrested and charged with burglary and criminal mischief.
...Schurley appeared to have been drinking before his arrest. Schurley reportedly told deputies that he was on Uptain’s property looking for someone named Amanda whom he met earlier in the evening. He was booked into the Putnam County Jail.
