Police are searching for two hit-and-run drivers who killed a man in a wheelchair on the Southside early Friday.
William Whyde was leaving Club Zeus after celebrating his 44th birthday when he was struck and killed by a van and a sedan in the 2700 block of Madison Avenue at 3:10 a.m.
"The debris was scattered everywhere, and he was face-down on the ground," said Billy Webb, a disc jockey at the show club, 2718 Madison Ave., who heard the crash.
Whyde was alone, Webb said, adding that Whyde drank a beer and talked to some of the dancers, then left the bar at closing time.
Whyde, who lived about a mile east in the 800 block of East Gimber Street, was crossing Madison in his motorized wheelchair when he was struck by a green mini-van.
As witnesses were rushing to help, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Lt. Jeff Duhamell said, Whyde was struck by a silver sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus or Chevrolet Malibu.
Neither driver stopped, police said.
