ERIE, Pa.—A 21-year-old Erie man has been charged with killing an 83-year-old neighbor after allegedly robbing her of $45 over the weekend.
Willie Russell Baker is charged with homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary, theft and receiving stolen property in the beating and stabbing death of Anne Ropelewski early Saturday.
Authorities allege that Baker broke into the home of the victim, who lived about a block and a half away from him. A criminal complaint alleges that he stabbed Ropelewski, dragged her body into the basement, hit with a hammer and stabbed her with "garden-like shears," and then stole her vehicle.
Erie County District Attorney Brad Foulk says he is considering pursuing the death penalty because of the allegation that the murder occurred during a felony.
