So, as if we didn't have our plate full of conflict right now - Venezuela's startin' shit (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080912/ts_nm/venezuela_chavez_dc;_ylt=ArN9WsIqv9PVmGk41lMNwYuGW o14). Chavez, the country's exceptionally couth leader () is taking shots in what's being dubbed a "diplomatic crisis":
Chavez, who calls ex-Cuban leader Fidel Castro his mentor, also on Thursday repeated a threat he has made often to cut off Venezuela's oil supply to the United States.
"Go to hell, shit Yankees, we are a dignified people, go to hell a hundred times," Chavez shouted at a political rally to thousands of roaring supporters dressed in red.
Weak, right? Oh, but it gets better. The U.S. responded by imposing sanctions (I mean, them's fightin' words, right?). Apparently, Chavez wants to be able to talk shit without repercussion and, as a result of the sanctions, is threatening to cut off the oil supply to the U.S. Worse yet? He's aligned himself with Russia, which happily accepted the invitation to have long range bombers land in the region to engage in war exercises with Venezuelan forces. Awesome, right?
Oh, and did I forget to mention that they booted our fucking embassador, and asked theirs to come back? (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080912/ts_nm/venezuela_chavez_dc;_ylt=AqavR4jJr_fiQ9OmdtdQ24EDW 7oF)
I don't blame the South Americans for being pissy. The U.S. has enjoyed entirely too much influence down there, forcing our drug war standards upon them and propping up and tumbling regimes as we see fit. We've been a straight up puppet master, and they're not having it anymore. But, seriously, is this a game Venezuela really wants to escalate, even if they've got Russia in their corner?
Can't we all just get along?
