SAN DIEGO - An East County man is being held without bail on allegations of possessing illicit images of children, according to federal officials.
U.S. Attorney Karen Hewitt announced the arrest of William Joseph Hazlitt, 27, of Ramona, on Thursday. He was taken into federal custody on Wednesday at his home. He was arraigned Thursday in federal court on one count of child pornography, Hewitt said.
According to a federal complaint, Hazlitt allegedly possessed hundreds of child porn images on his home computer, with victims as young as 9 years old "engaged in sexually explicit conduct."
Hazlitt has been a karate instructor at HT Martial Arts, located at 1520 Main St., which he co-owns. According to his bio posted on the business's Web site, his goals are to "continue teaching new students" and to "start a karate school."
U.S. Attorney Alessandra P. Serano saud authorities began investigating Hazlitt after an FBI special agent in Richmond, Va., began looking into LimeWire, a peer-to-peer file sharing. The agent said Hazlitt's name popped up for downloading hundreds of images.
Authorities in San Diego obtained a search warrant, and according to Serano, Hazlitt admitted to having the images on his computer.
Serano also said the investigation is ongoing as to whether Hazlitt may have molested or touched children inappropriately. Hazlitt's attorney told NBC 7/39 his client vehemently denies any inappropriate conduct with minors.
