Ariel Smith puts a baby in the dryer

A Harvey woman has been arrested for the murder of a five-month-old baby by Jefferson police, admitting that she put the child in a clothes dryer after the child frustrated her, police said.

Around 11 a.m., Ariel Smith called 911 saying that a baby at her home was not breathing, said a statement from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

First responders went to the scene, where Smith met personnel and directed them to Andre Jenkins, who was lying on the floor unresponsive. Police said that the boy was pronounced dead on the scene.

Homicide investigator Detective Keith Locascio determined that the infant had been dropped off at Smith’s home along with his 18-month-old brother by Brandy Dozier, the mother.

Dozier had dropped the children off for Smith to watch, police said, calling her a short time later and telling Dozier that her son had stopped breathing.

Smith told police that Andre had received burns on his body after his brother spilled a pot of boiling water on him, according to the sheriff’s office.

During the investigation, police said, that Smith continued to reiterate this story to investigators before admitting to police that the child received the burns after she had put him in a clothes dryer after becoming frustrated with the infant.

After putting the child in the dryer, police said, Smith admitted turning it on and leaving the room. When she returned to check on the child, Andre was not breathing.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office charged Smith, 19, with one count of first-degree murder.

At five months, they belong cuddled in your arms as you coo and softly pace the floor. If that doesn't work and they are clean and fed, no fever, then you put them safely in a quiet bed (not one they can roll off) and you let them cry. Check in on them at least every 10-15 minutes. If crying lasts longer than an hour, you can try the nice ride in the car trick--no, I don't mean throw them out somewhere along the way. Car rides often sooth and they fall asleep. Point is, stay calm, don't take the crying personally and for god's sake never, ever do anything to inflict harm you stupid cunt. If they are still fussing in the morning take them to a doctor!!

See? Very simple rules, even a caveman could do it.

I feel so sorry for the baby's mother. I did have some whacko sitters when my children were younger. Some were even recommended by ADC. Scarey!
They need to fry Ariel. I babysat regularly from the age of 13 and NEVER harmed a child. I don't care about her "frustration". Being frustrated does NOT mean that one cannot tell the difference between right and wrong.
My second child was colicky. She was born the day before my older child turned one. EVERY night I loaded two babies safely into their car seats and drove around. I drove both of them around because my ex-husband was usually out drinking, at home dead drunk or just plain passed out cold. I couldn't leave the older sleeping child with him
I was a regular fixture at the White Castle drive through, getting more coffee.
Sometimes, when my little screamer fell asleep I'd try to go back home. Usually this woke her up and we were back on the road again.
One night I just HAD to get some sleep. I put her, safely in her bassinet, in our front guest room and closed the door. I did this because I was exhausted and FRUSTRATED. I woke up about 6 hours later. Immediately terrified because it had been 6 hours I rushed to her. She was sleeping peacefully. I felt so bad because I was sure she'd been scared and missed at least one feeding that I never did that again.
I DO understand "frustrated". I do NOT understand how that heartless bitch could put an innocent little angel in the dryer. She deserves a slow, painful death, preferably with some burning involved.
Poor baby. May God hold him in his loving arms forever and give comfort to his mother.

A Harvey teen-ager who admitted to detectives that she put a baby in a clothes dryer so she could watch television without disturbance was indicted Thursday on a charge of second-degree murder.

Arielle Smith, 19, is accused of killing Andre Jenkins, 5 months old, on Sept. 11. Smith was watching the infant, his 18-month-old brother, and her 1-year-old son in her home at 512 MacArthur Drive. She was caring for the two brothers for her friend, who was at work, authorities said.

"She was trying to watch something on television," Assistant District Attorney Amanda Calogero said. "She put the two older kids in a room, and she put the baby in the dryer" and turned it on.

During the three minutes Andre was in the dryer, he suffered skull fractures and extensive burns, Calogero said. The baby died at the scene, she said.

Smith initially told detectives that a pot of boiling water fell on the infant, Calogero said. She changed her story to say she hid Andre in the dryer as they played a game of hide-and-seek and that her son must have turned the dryer on.

Pressed further by detectives, Smith admitted that the children "were rambunctious and interfering with her television show," according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office probable-cause affidavit.

Smith told detectives she removed clothing from the dryer, put the child in it and started the machine. Smith later removed the unresponsive baby, put the clothing back in the dryer and called her boyfriend and the baby's mother before calling authorities, according to the affidavit. Paramedics found the baby on Smith's living room floor with burns on his face, head, arms, legs and feet.

A judge last month found Smith was mentally competent at the time of the crime and is able to stand trial, court records show.

Smith's attorney Davidson Ehle declined comment.

Detectives booked Smith with first-degree murder Sept. 11, a charge that allows the death penalty, but a magistrate judge last year found evidence sufficient to hold her on the lesser charge, records show. If convicted of second-degree murder, Smith would face a mandatory life sentence in prison.

She is held in the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in lieu of a $500,000 bond set Thursday by Judge Glenn Ansardi of the 24th Judicial District Court.
