St. Lucie County woman facing child neglect charges after deputies find children with feces and bug bites on bodies

FORT PIERCE — A 19-year-old woman faces a child neglect charge after St. Lucie County Sheriff's investigators on Wednesday found bumps on her two children's arms and legs and trash and apparent mold all over her house, according to an arrest affidavit released Thursday.
Nelda Merissaint, of the 3400 block of Avenue F, was arrested after a deputy saw her 3-year-old son with bumps on his arms and legs that looked to be insect bites. He had feces on his upper buttocks area with insects crawling around.
Merissaint's 2-year-old daughter had similar bumps on her arms and legs and both children were covered in what appeared to be white paint.
Investigators saw broken windows in Merissaint's home and food with bugs crawling around. The bathroom had holes in the walls and feces overflowed from the toilet.
Mold appeared to be all over the residence, and the refrigerator wasn't working.
Merissaint told investigators that her home was being repaired. She said her children went into a room that had paint and lacked the time to clean them up.
State Department of Children and Families officials removed the children, and Merissaint was taken to the St. Lucie County jail.
She was held Thursday on $2,500 bail, a jail official said.
