Image Posting for Dummies?

Can anybody help me?
I know this is something that most people know how to do, but I'm stumped...

How do I post an image?
Sometimes I can, and sometimes (especially with the ones from news sites) I can't- when I copy/paste the image link, all I get is a red X.
I assume I have to save the image first- but where?
If anyone could explain, I'd be grateful. :redface:

The photos have to be hosted somewhere.

tinypic.com is good because you don't need to create an account.

Photobucket and Imageshack are others you can use.

Then you post the IMG link provided.
