CANTON A father who initially told police his infant son died after choking on formula has been charged with aggravated murder.
Steven E. Lawrence admitted becoming frustrated with his 16-day-old son after being confronted with evidence of the boy's injuries, investigators said.
Lawrence, 27, of 113 Harter Ave. NW, Apt. 8, was arrested at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 200 block of Third Street SW, police records show. Bond was set at nearly $2.8 million. He was scheduled to appear in court today.
Lawrence told police he shook and punched his son while caring for him Tuesday, according to a civil abuse complaint by the Stark County Department of Job and Family Services.
The father initially claimed that Michael, who died around 3 p.m. at Aultman Hospital, choked on formula.
A preliminary report from the Stark County coroner's office said the infant had skull fractures, internal bleeding in his abdomen and brain and broken ribs, court records show.
A police detective handling the investigation could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Lawrence reportedly told police he has anger management issues and depression, according to the Job and Family Services complaint.
The child's mother told social workers she was not home at the time.
"During the initial interviews, mother expressed support for Mr. Lawrence. After being provided the medical information, mother was upset," according to the Job and Family Services complaint.
