LARNED - An employee of Larned State Hospital has been arrested in connection with the early-morning escape earlier this month of a convicted child molester from the facility.
According to Michelle Ponce, director of communications for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, Topeka, Colleen McCoy was apprehended Tuesday by the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office and remained in custody Wednesday afternoon. Ponce was unsure where McCoy was incarcerated.
McCoy is alleged to have aided in the escape of Perry Lee Isley, 50, from the Sexual Predator Unit at Larned State Hospital. Isley fled around 2 a.m. on Aug. 5 by hiding in a laundry bin placed outside a secure building for overnight pick-up. He used a bolt cutter-like tool to cut through the security fences.
Isley was apprehended late the following evening in Colorado. Ponce said he remains in the custody of the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office in the Barton County Jail, charged with aggravated escape.
As for McCoy, Ponce was uncertain of what charges she faces. "Those are up to local officials," she said. Attorneys with the Pawnee County Attorney's Office hadn't returned Great Bend Tribune phone calls as of press time Wednesday.
The PCSO would not elaborate on McCoy's arrest or confirm where she was being held. The person answering the phone referred all calls to Ponce.
On the night of the escape, hospital staff discovered Isley was missing and immediately notified law enforcement officials, Ponce said. The search involved officers from the PCSO and the Kansas Highway Patrol utilizing vehicles, dogs and aircraft.
Isley, who also used the alias "Mad Dog," had been civilly committed to the Sexual Predator Treatment Program after serving a prison sentence, as mandated by state law, and is under the supervision of the 24th Judicial District. The predator program falls under the SRS's jurisdiction.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections Web site, Isley was most recently charged in Pawnee County with criminal threat in May 2006. However, in addition to an aggravated escape conviction dating back to April 1987 in Pawnee County, he has two convictions in Shawnee County for aggravated indecent liberties with a child less than 14/fondling. Those two occurred in April and June 1994 and he was sentenced in July 1995.
