A Gretna man was found dead inside of his home, the victim of what Gretna Police called a “very violent homicide.” Police arrested a homeless man who admitted to killing the victim after being invited to his home.

Gretna Police were called and asked to check on the man -- he had not up for work at John Ehret High School and school officials were unable to contact him -- and when they arrived at the home they found him dead inside of the house.

The victim, Weston “Tony” Verrette, had his throat slashed. The victim’s vehicle was missing and presumed stolen, as was his wallet and cell phone.

After an officer spotted the vehicle and stopped it, Louis Church, who was driving, was taken to the Gretna Police Department Detective Bureau where Verrette’s wallet and cell were found in the car.

Officers also found the alleged murder weapon. Church has admitted killing Verrette. He is the estranged stepson of retired a Gretna Police lieutenant.

Church said that he is homeless and he went Verrette’s home after Verrette offered him clean clothes, a bath and a meal.

Church told police that he and Verrette began drinking wine, and then Church fell asleep. Church said he was awoken by Verrette and a struggle unsued. He told police he became enraged by Verrette allegedly making sexual advances on him and pulled a knife and slashed the victim’s throat.

After killing Verrette, Church told police that he stayed in the home for hours and cleaned the crime scene.

Prior to this arrest, Grenta Police said that they had arrested Church two times in July. On July 9, he was arrested for simple battery; he was later charged with simple assault as well, stemming from threats towards to the witness of the burglary. On July 23, he was arrested on five charges of carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

Gretna Police will not be pursuing hate crime charges because Church said he was enraged by the alleged sexual advances but not because of a blanket judgment about Verrette's sexuality.
