MARYVILLE - A Maryville couple who worked as youth leaders at church have been accused of having sexual relations with at least three teenage girls in their congregation and may have victimized other youths, according to police.
The man and woman, Michael Roy Salazar and Laura Lee Click Salazar, both 35, attended Lord's Disciple Church, a small house of worship on Old Knoxville Pike in Maryville.
Michael Salazar has been charged with three counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and three counts of statutory rape. His wife faces one count each of sexual battery by an authority figure and statutory rape.
They were arrested last week based on reports from three 16-year-old girls who attended the church, according to Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp. The girls met with police on Aug. 5, along with their parents and the youth pastor from the church.
The three told police they had participated in numerous acts of vaginal and oral sex with Michael Salazar and his wife, according to authorities. The encounters allegedly began last year, when the girls were 15 years old, Crisp said.
The girls also named another potential victim, who later met with police and gave an account similar to theirs.
Crisp said he believes there were more victims and stressed that the investigation is ongoing.
When asked if either suspect had made any statements to police, Crisp said he couldn't comment. He said that police have recovered physical evidence that corroborates the girls' accounts but didn't release details.
Church officials couldn't be reached for comment, but a hand-written sign hanging on the door of the church's modest building near downtown Maryville said that all services and events at the facility have been canceled until further notice.
The note on the door, which was signed only "Pastor Keith," said the cancellation of activities at the facility was "because of the media and those who can not stop talking (gossip). Jesus said all men will give an account for every idle word that comes from their mouth."
Both suspects remained in jail Tuesday. Michael Salazar's bond was set at $300,000 and his wife's was $100,000.
