8/03/07 - Here is another post that keeps getting pulled up from search engines. It is also another 3-year-old post in which the movie Silent Night, Deadly Night is completely spoiled. It is supposed to be funny...your mileage may vary.
This is not really a 'review' as much as a post in which the movie was dissected in it's entirety. It does not follow any of the review guidelines as it was done years before. The movie is completely spoiled so reader beware. I am moving this to the reviews section, only because there is not much else I can say about the film, but feel that this post still qualified as a review.

Silent Night, Deadly Night is a film about Christmas. More specifically...Santa Claus. It is a family film that tries to show you not only the traditions and values that society is lacking, especially around the Christmas season...but it is also a coming of age story about a young boy named Billy who not only suffers the loss of his parents but also has to endure the cruel environment of a Catholic orphanage run by a sadistic nun. The movie shows how the spirit of Christmas and the values of Ol' St Nick help Billy to rise above all of his tormentors and not just break free of his hatred of Christmas but to love and embrace it.
Let us begin this story where the movie does...Christmas Eve, 1971.

Seems Grandpa don't do much these days aside from staring. After a 10 second attempt to get Grandpa to talk, Billy's parents leave to go talk to the doctor...leaving Billy alone with Gramps. Man, oh man, does it get weird here.
Seems Grandpa has something he wants to only tell Billy after everyone is gone. He informs Billy that if he has not been good all year, Santa Claus will punish him. When Billy confirms the fact that he has not been good all year, Grandpa tells Billy that if he sees Santa Claus, he better run for his life. Grandpa then breaks into a maniac laugh before resuming his catatonic position right before Mom and Dad come back:

It is now night, and the family is heading back home. What Billy's family is unaware of is that there is a robbery in progress. Yup, a scum-bag is robbing a convenience store in a Santa Claus suit.

Later on , down the road, Billy and his family run across the Santa Claus scum-bag on a deserted stretch of road. Seems like his cool lookin' car aint runnin no more. Billy's dad stops to see what the problem is. Santa pulls a gun and states there is no problem. Dad tries to floor it in reverse, but unfortunately...
Let me stop here and say that parents got pretty upset with this movie because it was released during the Christmas season..sounded like a cool marketing plan, right? Nope...this movie tanked and was released a year later. Well here is one of the reasons why. The next scene was pretty mean spirited.
Santa shoots dad as he is driving backwards causing the car to stop. Billy runs and hides behind some bushes on the side of the road. Santa then pulls the mother out of the car (who is trying to protect baby Ricky), throws her out in the road, and in the movies first gratuitous tit shot, rips open her shirt (you will see this scene and Mom's tits about 5 more times throughout the movie in flashbacks). He then smacks her one good time before slashing her throat...all the while Billy is hiding in some bushes watching the entire thing. This scene is a little disturbing not only in the aspect of a little kid watching his family get killed, but the entire time, baby Ricky is in the car screaming his head off, and Santa is yelling "Where are ya' you little bastard?!!".

We now go 3 years forward...1974. Here we are at St. Mary's Home for Orphaned Children. Billy and his brother Ricky now live here and over the last 3 years Billy has morphed into a completely different boy,

but hey...he lost his parents and is being raised by nuns...it can happen. We see Billy has gotten himself into trouble with a drawing he has made:

This orphange is run by one mean nun. Her name is Mother Superior and is played convincingly by, Lilyan Chauvin (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0154412/):

She is a great actress and you have probably seen her before in other movies dating as far back as 1957. She has been in Predator 2 and Pumpkinhead 2, but where I immediately recognized her from was Phantasmagoria, a PC horror\\adventure game. She played Ethel, Malcolm's housekeeper.
Mother Superior is a cross between Nurse Ratchet and the grandmother from Flowers in the Attic. She takes no BS from anyone and is from the school of Punishment is Good. She particularly likes thrashing people with a belt. Not just Billy:

But she even whips two teenagers for having sex...whips them at the same time!

She is the compassionate nun. She understands that Billy is suffering from the events of Christmas Eve 1971. Every year, around Christmas, Billy starts acting up. Sister Margeret wants to get Billy help, Mother Superior wants to do things the old-fashioned, godly way when Billy is being naughty...punish him...hey it worked on the Native Americans. This includes things like tying him to his bed whenever he starts having nightmares about his family being killed:

She even attempts to put Billy on Santa Claus lap...an event that all the kids in the orphange will be talking about for a pretty good while I bet.

We now fast forward 10 years...it is Spring of 1984. Billy is now 18 and has turned out to be quite the young man:

Let's take this time to investigate what a traumatizing event, coupled with the severe punishments Mother Superior delt out over the years can do to a young boy.

Sister Margaret has just gotten him a job at Ira's Toy store. I mean, seriously...what could go wrong with that? They know he freaks during Christmas, so what better place for him to work. I mean, why not a mechanic or something? Not much happens at first. In fact, Billy is a damn good worker...he is always on time, busts his ass, doesn't loaf (an exact polar opposite of myself I might add) but it is only Spring...wonder how Billy is going to hold up come Christmas season? Well, lets skip a bit of the movie and find out.
Oh Yeah, before we do that...just wanted to point out something about Ira's Toy Store. During the shooting inside this store, I couldn't help but notice some cool ass toys from the 80's on the shelf. Throughout the movie I saw:

Ok, back to Billy. He isn't doin' so well. It is getting close to Christmas and between freakin out every time he sees a Santa in the store, he is having dreams of having sex with one of his co-workers...I know, that's not to weird, we all do that...but Billy's dreams end with Santa coming into the room and gutting him. Poor Billy. To top things off, his boss has now volunteered Billy to put on the Santa Suit and play Santa for when the kids come visit. Poor everyone else.

EDIT: Since this was last posted, I no longer have girlfriend mentioned. It had nothing to do with me dressing as Santa and treating her like a naughty 8 year old. She was quite clear that I did no take care of her emotional needs, could not shit 50 dollar bills, and realized that I did not like having my head up her ass 24/7. http://www.dreamindemon.com/forums/../forumsbak/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif
But it isn't until later that night after the store has closed that things turn sinister. After having a few too many drinks during the store Christmas party (this actually only included 5 people...including Billy), Billy witnesses a rape in progress in the stores stockroom. This is the point that Billy finally snaps. It will lead to one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of Utah history. The Ira's Toy Store Massacre.
First, he screams "Naughty!" and then hangs Andy with some nearby Christmas lights. Billy does this one handed and the lights never go out. The Spirit of Christmas is alive and well it seems.

Next, he goes after Pam by slitting her navel to sternum while informing her that "Punishment is necessary, Pamela. IT IS GOOD!".

The completely plastered boss, thinking he hears something, makes his way back to the store room and is greeted with a claw hammer, but not before uttering the most creepy "Yoo Hoo!" I have ever heard in my life:

With everyone in the store now dead, Billy takes to the street to perform his new job as Santa Claus..punishing the bad boys and girls...punishing them severly.

All I can say is that I want the number of the person who hung that deer head on the wall...I got posters that I cant seem to get to stay up and yet this damn deer head has a full grown woman hanging off of it without being pulled from the wall. Could this just be more Christmas miracles?
Next Billy dispatches the boyfriend by throwing him out of the window:

Before he leaves, he stops to talk to little Cynthia. Seems Cynthia has actually been good all year so instead of severely punishing her with the case cutter he was sliding out of his pocket, Billy gives her the case cutter as a present for being good and leaves.
Out in the woods, two boys are about to go sledding on some virgin snow. Before they have that chance, they are interrupted by Bob and Matt, two bullies:

These two assholes take the boys sleds and make them leave. Personally, the guy on the left looked sort of like a bully...but what the hell is up with the guy on the right? If you are going to go around being a badass, why would you wear a powder blue jacket, a big, blue toboggan with a fluff ball on top and leave a tuft of blonde hair peeking out from the front? The guy on the left should kick his buddies ass for even wearing something like that around him. He looks sort of like an deranged Keebler Elf.
Regardless, the powder blue elf uses a sled to go down the hill and has no issues, but his friend doesn't fair so well. Seems Billy is also out in the middle of nowhere and he thought the bullies actions were quite "Naughty!" and decapitates one of them:

The next morning, Christmas Day, the orphanage is celebrating as they usually do by handing out presents and having "Santa Claus" stop by for a visit. The orphanage has picked Father O'Brian to play Santa Claus this year, and he is deaf. (I know...how in the hell could a deaf guy play Santa).
So we have cops looking for someone from the orphanage dressed as Santa and we have a deaf guy dressed as Santa going to the orphanage. What could possibly go wrong here?

For those of you who did not watch the movie clip, he gets his deaf ass capped by Officer Barnes...in front of all the kids. Father O'Brian dies right at the feet of Billy's little brother, Ricky. It was priceless.
At this point, everyone is looking for Billy. They suspect he is headed to the orphanage, so the orphanage is on lockdown and being guarded by Officer Barnes. Mother Superior is still here, although in a wheelchair, but I feel they should just let her handle things...she would whip Billy back to sane.
Officer Barnes decides to take a look around the grounds. He ends up finding Billy while checking out a storage building. Billy places an axe into Officer Barnes ala Jack Torrence to Dick Hallorann in The Shining...except Billy yelled "PUNISH!".

Well, the next scene is the most violent, disturbing, gut-wrenching kill I have ever witnessed in a movie. It made me physically ill by the sheer realism and cruelness of it. People, it does not get any sicker than this...you have been warned.

Billy makes his way into the orphanage and in front of all the kids, raises an axe to wedge into Mother Superiors head. The cool thing here is that Mother Superior is tough to the end. She doesn't scream or beg or anything. She just closes her eyes...she is one tough nun. But before Billy can deliver the fatal blow, he is shot in the back by Capt Richards. I would put a screen shot or some video of it, but if you can imagine someone getting shot in the back and the falling down, well, that's pretty much how it happened.

But all is not lost...Billy's brother has witnessed all of these events...and in a scene worth an Oscar, little Ricky looks Mother Superior in the face and says one word:

Not much to say about this movie, as I am sure everyone has already seen it. You either liked it or you did not. Personally, I thought it was a great, bitter entry in the 80's slasher genre.

Seems Grandpa has something he wants to only tell Billy after everyone is gone. He informs Billy that if he has not been good all year, Santa Claus will punish him. When Billy confirms the fact that he has not been good all year, Grandpa tells Billy that if he sees Santa Claus, he better run for his life. Grandpa then breaks into a maniac laugh before resuming his catatonic position right before Mom and Dad come back:

Later on , down the road, Billy and his family run across the Santa Claus scum-bag on a deserted stretch of road. Seems like his cool lookin' car aint runnin no more. Billy's dad stops to see what the problem is. Santa pulls a gun and states there is no problem. Dad tries to floor it in reverse, but unfortunately...
Let me stop here and say that parents got pretty upset with this movie because it was released during the Christmas season..sounded like a cool marketing plan, right? Nope...this movie tanked and was released a year later. Well here is one of the reasons why. The next scene was pretty mean spirited.
Santa shoots dad as he is driving backwards causing the car to stop. Billy runs and hides behind some bushes on the side of the road. Santa then pulls the mother out of the car (who is trying to protect baby Ricky), throws her out in the road, and in the movies first gratuitous tit shot, rips open her shirt (you will see this scene and Mom's tits about 5 more times throughout the movie in flashbacks). He then smacks her one good time before slashing her throat...all the while Billy is hiding in some bushes watching the entire thing. This scene is a little disturbing not only in the aspect of a little kid watching his family get killed, but the entire time, baby Ricky is in the car screaming his head off, and Santa is yelling "Where are ya' you little bastard?!!".

We now go 3 years forward...1974. Here we are at St. Mary's Home for Orphaned Children. Billy and his brother Ricky now live here and over the last 3 years Billy has morphed into a completely different boy,

This orphange is run by one mean nun. Her name is Mother Superior and is played convincingly by, Lilyan Chauvin (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0154412/):

She is a great actress and you have probably seen her before in other movies dating as far back as 1957. She has been in Predator 2 and Pumpkinhead 2, but where I immediately recognized her from was Phantasmagoria, a PC horror\\adventure game. She played Ethel, Malcolm's housekeeper.
Mother Superior is a cross between Nurse Ratchet and the grandmother from Flowers in the Attic. She takes no BS from anyone and is from the school of Punishment is Good. She particularly likes thrashing people with a belt. Not just Billy:

She is the compassionate nun. She understands that Billy is suffering from the events of Christmas Eve 1971. Every year, around Christmas, Billy starts acting up. Sister Margeret wants to get Billy help, Mother Superior wants to do things the old-fashioned, godly way when Billy is being naughty...punish him...hey it worked on the Native Americans. This includes things like tying him to his bed whenever he starts having nightmares about his family being killed:

Sister Margaret has just gotten him a job at Ira's Toy store. I mean, seriously...what could go wrong with that? They know he freaks during Christmas, so what better place for him to work. I mean, why not a mechanic or something? Not much happens at first. In fact, Billy is a damn good worker...he is always on time, busts his ass, doesn't loaf (an exact polar opposite of myself I might add) but it is only Spring...wonder how Billy is going to hold up come Christmas season? Well, lets skip a bit of the movie and find out.
Oh Yeah, before we do that...just wanted to point out something about Ira's Toy Store. During the shooting inside this store, I couldn't help but notice some cool ass toys from the 80's on the shelf. Throughout the movie I saw:

Ok, back to Billy. He isn't doin' so well. It is getting close to Christmas and between freakin out every time he sees a Santa in the store, he is having dreams of having sex with one of his co-workers...I know, that's not to weird, we all do that...but Billy's dreams end with Santa coming into the room and gutting him. Poor Billy. To top things off, his boss has now volunteered Billy to put on the Santa Suit and play Santa for when the kids come visit. Poor everyone else.

EDIT: Since this was last posted, I no longer have girlfriend mentioned. It had nothing to do with me dressing as Santa and treating her like a naughty 8 year old. But it isn't until later that night after the store has closed that things turn sinister. After having a few too many drinks during the store Christmas party (this actually only included 5 people...including Billy), Billy witnesses a rape in progress in the stores stockroom. This is the point that Billy finally snaps. It will lead to one of the most bizarre crimes in the annals of Utah history. The Ira's Toy Store Massacre.
First, he screams "Naughty!" and then hangs Andy with some nearby Christmas lights. Billy does this one handed and the lights never go out. The Spirit of Christmas is alive and well it seems.

Before he leaves, he stops to talk to little Cynthia. Seems Cynthia has actually been good all year so instead of severely punishing her with the case cutter he was sliding out of his pocket, Billy gives her the case cutter as a present for being good and leaves.
Out in the woods, two boys are about to go sledding on some virgin snow. Before they have that chance, they are interrupted by Bob and Matt, two bullies:

These two assholes take the boys sleds and make them leave. Personally, the guy on the left looked sort of like a bully...but what the hell is up with the guy on the right? If you are going to go around being a badass, why would you wear a powder blue jacket, a big, blue toboggan with a fluff ball on top and leave a tuft of blonde hair peeking out from the front? The guy on the left should kick his buddies ass for even wearing something like that around him. He looks sort of like an deranged Keebler Elf.
Regardless, the powder blue elf uses a sled to go down the hill and has no issues, but his friend doesn't fair so well. Seems Billy is also out in the middle of nowhere and he thought the bullies actions were quite "Naughty!" and decapitates one of them:

The next morning, Christmas Day, the orphanage is celebrating as they usually do by handing out presents and having "Santa Claus" stop by for a visit. The orphanage has picked Father O'Brian to play Santa Claus this year, and he is deaf. (I know...how in the hell could a deaf guy play Santa).
So we have cops looking for someone from the orphanage dressed as Santa and we have a deaf guy dressed as Santa going to the orphanage. What could possibly go wrong here?

For those of you who did not watch the movie clip, he gets his deaf ass capped by Officer Barnes...in front of all the kids. Father O'Brian dies right at the feet of Billy's little brother, Ricky. It was priceless.
At this point, everyone is looking for Billy. They suspect he is headed to the orphanage, so the orphanage is on lockdown and being guarded by Officer Barnes. Mother Superior is still here, although in a wheelchair, but I feel they should just let her handle things...she would whip Billy back to sane.
Officer Barnes decides to take a look around the grounds. He ends up finding Billy while checking out a storage building. Billy places an axe into Officer Barnes ala Jack Torrence to Dick Hallorann in The Shining...except Billy yelled "PUNISH!".

Well, the next scene is the most violent, disturbing, gut-wrenching kill I have ever witnessed in a movie. It made me physically ill by the sheer realism and cruelness of it. People, it does not get any sicker than this...you have been warned.

Billy makes his way into the orphanage and in front of all the kids, raises an axe to wedge into Mother Superiors head. The cool thing here is that Mother Superior is tough to the end. She doesn't scream or beg or anything. She just closes her eyes...she is one tough nun. But before Billy can deliver the fatal blow, he is shot in the back by Capt Richards. I would put a screen shot or some video of it, but if you can imagine someone getting shot in the back and the falling down, well, that's pretty much how it happened.
While laying on the ground, Billy has some parting words:

Not much to say about this movie, as I am sure everyone has already seen it. You either liked it or you did not. Personally, I thought it was a great, bitter entry in the 80's slasher genre.
