View Full Version : Pop Up Ads in the Forums

Almost every time I visit the forums, I get a pop up ad (usually circuit city or verizon) that won't clear off of my screen. Then, the message "out of memory at line 56" which I have to click "ok" to get to clear off. The advertisement remains, and I end up having to close the whole window. It takes some effort to even get the window to close. It literally freezes up my whole works.

I usually have multiple Internet windows open at the same time, and the other ones remain totally fine. It's just the forums.

I'm almost to the point where I'll just stay on the main page, because this sucks.

I mentioned this in Chatbox last week, and before I got to see anyone's reply, I got locked up and had to reboot. :help:

I've never had a pop-up on D'D. I use pop-up blockers so that may be the reason.

There are NO pop-ups on this site. You have an issue with your PC. We run two ads...AdBrite, who uses no pop-ups...and Amazon, who also use no pop-ups. That's it. Any other ads that pop-up would have to be placed by me, which we never do. If you are unsure, check out the ad that is getting popped up...if it is not from AdBrite (which it couldn't be anyway) or Amazon (see AdBrite) then you are a victim of Spyware, Adware, etc. Get it cleaned up.

Mandella, some other folks have been getting popup ads, but Morbid said they are NOT coming from this site. (Unless the forums have been hijacked or something. Can you even do that?)

Dammit, Morbid is too fast.

Mandella, if you are getting pop-ups often, you might want to run AdAware on your computer. That might tell you where they're coming from and get rid of the problem.

Adbrite (adbrite.com) is an ad server. What that means is that I don't choose which ads run...hence a talking ad may show up. But there are no pop-ups from them at all.

We run two ads on the forums. One in the header, one in the footer. That's it. the front page, however, uses the exact same ads, but just a different size and location.

I have not had it yet, so next time anyone sees it, let me know what ad it is and I can get it blocked.

I'm just glad they moved on from that lady shaking her tits at me and that one guy wanting to show me his "stimulus package."

I like my ads to run a fresh batch of skeezes every so often. I get bored pretty quickly.

I also had a problem with pop-ups last week. The sites were:
trashpretty.com
adserving.cpxinteractive.com
webridestv.com

When I blocked pop-ups from all sites on FF I would get that little warning box saying that it had blocked 2-3 pop-ups from this site.

It hasn't happened to me again since last Thursday or Friday. I have noticed though that most of the time the header ad is blank except for the 'your ad link'. The footer for Amazon is always there.

I am just chalking it up to the server problems last week and hope it doesn't happen again.

I am doing a little site design work over the next couple of days, including adding the header and footer ad back. The difference being that they will be coded into the actual header and footer instead of using the outdated plugin I was using before that did it for me.

I'll let you know when that is done (you will probably see me working on it) and we will see if the pop-ups return or not.

Morbid

You will start seeing slight changes in ad placement. Nothing too distracting. One in the header, one in the footer, one after the first post in a thread and possibly one directly after the Shoutbox.

That's ony four ads. Three will be served via Adbrite and Widgetbucks, the fourth will be Amazon. They shouldn't be too distracting. Currently, I am testing Widgetbucks in the footer.

Hopefully we will get to a point to where I can remove the donate link. But the ads are here for awhile I'm afraid. I'll tweak the fuck out of them though...too make them as unobtrusive as possible, yet still used in a way some of you may actually use them on occasion. I'll keep you updated.

I got one the other night, about two days ago. It was a talking ad, but set my Trend Micro-PCillin to flaming with accusations that I had tried to open a dangerous site. All I remember is a woman's voice saying very slowly, "You have been chose to win a laptop." I was moving from one place in the Forums to another. Next time I'll try to spend less time panicking and figure out where the ad is coming from. I run my virus/adware/spyware program about every other day, so it's not something that I've picked up over the past month.

As soon as I got popups hurting my arcade antics, I reinstalled Spybot S&D, updated it, immunized and scanned. I had previously uninstalled it because it wasn't getting along with my anti-virus.
My results were just some tracking cookies. Since you added some ads back again I have gotten 1 popup. Please note they have never been popup windows but rather flash based. Another note is that they seem to be mostly driven by a mouse over event in an ad banner.
Meh...I can deal with it so don't pull out too much hair, then again it hasn't screwed up a potentail high score yet.:p

TMS, THANK YOU>. That makes way more sense. I can see rollover flash ads being in place. If there are any ads that are causing you issues, simply PM or email me and I can check them out and see if we can have them blocked.

Some of the sites mentioned earlier are not even a part of the ad network we are associated with, though. I upgraded the forums last night, so we are at the latest version. I just wanted to ensure we were not being taken advantage of by some type of security hole.

10:30 PM EST -- Aug 14.

I just tried to connect the the DD page (not the forums) and had my computer go beserk. Multiple "dangerous site, don't open" windows opened and they all cited www.ad2.adecn.com (I think I got that right). On the lefthand lower corner of my screen the addresses for many, many places were spinning by rapidly. They were so fast I could only catch a few: www.mafia5.com, www.myprofileping.com, www.adyieldmanager.com.

My computer froze and now I am running my Trend Pc-cillin. The last time I did this, it found nothing, so I guess my computer is effectively blocking the stuff. However, I hate having my computer go into a spasm.

I wish I knew. I have been searching around like crazy. The only thing I can figure, and admittedly I am guessing like hell, is that the pop-ups are triggered by code vBulletin uses. Something these types of adware programs look for to activate. Again, a guess. I will continue to investigate, though.

We still have not pinpointed where they are coming from. But remember, there are talking ads (that's just something that I have to remove manually), rollover ads (see talking ads) and then the dreaded trashpretty ones. THOSE are the ones we are trying to find out the origin of.

We have updated all mods, the server is scanned for viruses, removed all old mods we are no longer using and lastly, removed the smilies (we got info that this may be the origin...some new smilies that were added),

I STILL am not getting them and I am running a few different PC's with different OS and different browsers so it makes it tough for me to troubleshoot. Thanks for all the help.

I am unsure why i am getting them but they are so bad I can not get anything to move in my machine I have to ctrl del alt into task manager and shut down everything.

I am running Vista home, IE7 and have pop up blockers on' I have only one toolbar which I am about to get rid of just to be sure it is not that.

I was getting quite a few - I even got a full screen one that had the skip ad link in the top right corner.

Using IE I have not got any for the past month after doing the following. I am sure there is an identical way to do it using FireFox.

First, search your drive(s) for yieldmanager and delete everything found.

IE7:
Go under the menu item "tools" and select "Internet Options". Select the "security" tab and select "Restricted Sites" Make sure the security level for the zone is set to "high" and click the "Sites" button. Add "*.yieldmanager" (no quotes - don't forget the *.).

Well removed the Toolbar was not happy having it anyway so not really done because of this.
I just got slammed and had to task manager out of IE to get it to stop and unlock.

The site names were rolling past really fast and for the life of me i can not remember them all I know ad click and a few other things that started with ad were included in it. Sorry not overly helpful

i am sure if it came down to it all of the regulars can chip in some. I mean I do not have a lot of money but would be able to toss in a little every couple months. I have come to adore this place and call it home so i sure do not wish to see it go anywhere because of $.
At the same point these are not happening that often Thank heavens
This is the first I got since my last post.
So a task manager shut down of IE is not that big a deal if the ads are that important.

Whatever happens i am happy to help.

I have it figured out. It's gonna take a bit of time, but I will have it fixed over the weekend. The entire problem has just been some 3rd party banner ads via Adbrite. Other sites have had the same issue. Give me a couple days and we should be ok.

To give more detail, Adbrite serves ads from all over the place. SOme our location specific or even time based. It is why some of you get the pop-ups and others do not. I can either manually approve or reject ads. Lately, I have been manually approving ads, but not really sure what to look out for aside from the foreign language ones. I have now been informed to stay away from 3rd-party ads (which we have running) as they are the ones that can cause the problems we have been experiencing.

I am going to remove ALL ads, and then slowly ad back all non-3rd party ads.

I've been getting some full page ads on the FP the last couple of days. Is anyone else getting them, or is it just me?? After the first couple of ads, I cleared my cache and ran AdAware. Even after that, I got another one just now.

One of them is from Crackle and the other ones were Free HD DivX.

When I use my Safari browser, I've been getting a noisy banner ad here, so I switched to Firefox for the site which has Adblock Plus installed and no problems since.

Yeah, Full page ads are on at the moment. Testing to see if they are a more viable option than having the banners on the site. If they are, we will remove all the banners. If they are not, well, business as usual. You should only get one full-page ad every 24 hours or so...something like that. It may reset if you clear your cookies and cache...not 100 percent certain on that.

Watch the Penn and Teller one from Crackle, though. It's not bad. Talks about a magic trick he kinda messed up on Letterman. I like those guys.

The Penn and Teller one was the first one I got. Very tolerable.
And my computer didn't hate it, either.
