Troopers have identified the driver accused of killing a 3-year-old boy in a hit-and-run accident Saturday night as Kenneth Donyale Edwards, 41, of Leesburg.
Edwards -- who has never been issued a drivers license -- veered off Twin Palms Road near Fruitland Park in Lake County and into a yard where a family was standing, the Florida Highway Patrol said early today.
The 2005 Buick that Edwards was driving hit the toddler and pinned him against a car that was parked in the driveway, according to a report. Edwards got out of the car, then got back in and fled the scene.
He was arrested about a mile away at a residence, the report said. Troopers drew blood to determine if Edwards was driving under the influence. He was booked into Lake County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide and driving without a license.
The child, Zachary Foster, of California, was taken to Leesburg Medical Center, where he died shortly after 9 p.m., about a half-hour after the accident.
