COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia police have arrested and charged a 21-year-old woman with homicide by child abuse.

Police say Kendra Patricia Samuel is a roommate of the victim's mother.

"She indicated that while she was trying to give the child a bottle the child became fussy, wouldn't take a bottle and she said the baby just kind of slumped over. She did not provide any immediate aid to the child, did not take the child to the hospital, and the child died," says Columbia Police Captain Thomas Dodson.

Samuel, who just turned 21, is now charged with homicide by child abuse.

"She actually took time to wrap the child and tell the parents there may be something wrong with the child and then the child was taken to the hospital and the child was dead," Dodson says. "You can dress it up any way you want and it's still a murder."

"You just can't trust anyone with your kids," says neighbor Demetrius Young.

Young told us she saw Samuel walking the baby home from the park the night the infant died, and with his mother after the boy's death.

"I talked with her the morning when they came back from the hospital and she kept saying I just can't believe the baby's dead, that's what the girl kept saying, and I didn't think she would do anything to hurt the baby. She was just standing there just as concerned as the mother was," said Young.

A Columbia woman accused of shaking her friend’s baby to death faced a judge Thursday morning. Kendra Samuel, age 21 is facing a homicide by child abuse charge for shaking a two and half month old baby to death on July 31st.

Columbia Police say it happened at an apartment on Slighs Avenue. Investigators say Samuel was watching Jessica Davis’ baby and became frustrated when he would not stop crying. Police say Samuel confessed to shaking the child violently until he went limp. An autopsy found the baby died from shaken baby syndrome.

Samuel’s family and Davis spoke out in court today in what turned out to be an emotional bond hearing.

"I never thought in my heart that she would do something to my child. She helped me plan his funeral, and walked around me like it was nothing, like she hurt just as much as I did,” Davis said.

"That's not the monster that I raised, and I want this court to free my baby -- cuz I know she didn't do this your honor,” Angela Youngblood, Samuel’s mother said.

The Judge denied Samuel’s bond, she remains at the Alvin S. Glenn detention center. If convicted on the homicide by child abuse charge, she could face 20 years to life in prison.
