COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Columbia police have arrested and charged a 21-year-old woman with homicide by child abuse.
Police say Kendra Patricia Samuel is a roommate of the victim's mother.
"She indicated that while she was trying to give the child a bottle the child became fussy, wouldn't take a bottle and she said the baby just kind of slumped over. She did not provide any immediate aid to the child, did not take the child to the hospital, and the child died," says Columbia Police Captain Thomas Dodson.
Samuel, who just turned 21, is now charged with homicide by child abuse.
"She actually took time to wrap the child and tell the parents there may be something wrong with the child and then the child was taken to the hospital and the child was dead," Dodson says. "You can dress it up any way you want and it's still a murder."
"You just can't trust anyone with your kids," says neighbor Demetrius Young.
Young told us she saw Samuel walking the baby home from the park the night the infant died, and with his mother after the boy's death.
"I talked with her the morning when they came back from the hospital and she kept saying I just can't believe the baby's dead, that's what the girl kept saying, and I didn't think she would do anything to hurt the baby. She was just standing there just as concerned as the mother was," said Young.
