MAYS LANDING – Ronald Weed stared straight ahead, appearing calm and speaking clearly as Superior Court Judge Michael Donio told him he was charged with stabbing his mother to death and critically wounding his 12-year-old twin nieces.
One of the twins called 911 Tuesday after Weed "snapped" and began to attack them with a ceramic bowl, ax handle and a knife, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office and Weed’s father, Franklin Weed Jr. He said his son is a diagnosed schizophrenic who has refused treatment.
Weed is charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault plus possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Other charges are possible, depending on the condition of the two girls, Courtney and Kimberly McCarten.
First Assistant Prosecutor Murray Talasnik, who is handling the matter for the state, said Courtney McCarten has undergone surgery and remained in critical condition, but Kimberly McCarten had undergone surgery and is now in grave condition.
