A 23-year-old Lehigh Acres woman was arrested on four felony complaints of child neglect Monday after her four young children were found home alone after she was earlier arrested for allegedly stealing mail, according to a Lee County Sheriffʼs Office report.

Retasha Nashay Alexander, of 4407 SW 22nd St., Lehigh Acres, was first arrested about 11:15 a.m. Monday on a petty theft charge, records show.

Deputies were originally called to a residence in the 5500 block of Berryman Avenue where Patricia Joyce told them she had put envelopes containing checks in the mail box.

As she walked back to her house, she saw three women in a Toyota Camry stop at her mailbox and the front seat passenger took the mail out and placed a different envelope inside. Joyce said she went back to her mailbox and found a letter addressed to a different woman at 4407 SW 22nd St., records show.

Joyce and her boyfriend followed the Toyota, got a partial tag and followed the car to the area of Southwest 28th Street Southwest and Owen. A Lee County deputy found the vehicle and stopped it at 24th Street Southwest and Joe Avenue South.

The deputy questioned the women about the mail incident, and they told him the only mail in the vehicle was their own, according to the report. They allowed him to search the car.

Alexander, the front seat passenger, had a Florida driverʼs license belonging to a 27-year-old woman, and a Florida identification card belonging to yet another woman, whose age was listed at 24.

The back seat passenger, Tameka L. Alexander, 26, of 44-07 SW 22nd St., in Lehigh, was found with credit cards in three other peopleʼs name, including one name which matched the mail left in Joyceʼs mailbox, according to the report.

Two checks written by Joyce and a third check written by Juan Gutierrez, of the 4500 block of22nd Street Southwest in Lehigh were found stuffed into the rear seat. Gutierrez said he placed the mail in his mailbox about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Joyce and her boyfriend identified the three women as the ones they had watched take the mail, according to the report.

The driver of the vehicle, Cassandra Faye Terrell, no age given, was given a citation for driving while knowing her license was suspended. Jail records show she is 25 years old and was recently arrested for violation of probation on a felony charge. She has a lengthy arrest record dating back to 2001, computerized records show.

Retasha Alexander asked a deputy at 4:30 p.m. if she could make arrangements for her children to be picked up from daycare, which he allowed.

However, at 5:17 p.m., a deputy was asked to assist the Florida Department of Children and Families with four young children who were left home alone. One of the children told authorities their mother had left that morning and did not know where her mother went or when she would be at home.

The children were unharmed and turned over to an aunt, records show.

Retasha Alexander also has a lengthy arrest record in Lee County, computerized records show. She has been arrested on at least one previous felony charge and numerous misdemeanors. She posted bond on each of the four felony charges of child neglect and the petty theft charge and released Tuesday. The bond was $1,500 on the felony counts and $500 on the petty theft charge, records show.

Tameka Alexander has an arrest record dating to 2000 in Lee County, ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. As late as Tuesday afternoon she remained in Lee County Jail.

They all look like they've paid a visit to hair-do hell.

Why would anyone put checks to go out in their mailbox? Even us hicks know better than that.

I also can't remember when I last wrote a check.
