A registered sex offender was charged Tuesday with sexually assaulting his neighbor after binding her in a filthy camping trailer near Lebanon.
John J. Burton, 44, was charged with eight counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, one count of aggravated battery and one count of unlawful restraint.
The 64-year-old neighbor, a dog groomer, had gone to Burton's house after he asked for help with his dog around 1 a.m. Monday.
A criminal complaint filed by prosecutors on Tuesday says Burton lashed the woman with his belt, tied her up with rope and tape, and then began the sexual assault.
The victim's son fought with Burton shortly before police arrived at the scene. Burton was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where he remains in police custody on $1.5 million bail.
The victim remained hospitalized late Tuesday, according to police.
Burton was convicted in 1995 of criminal sexual assault in Madison County and was sentenced to four years in state prison. He was arrested in March for failure to notify police of a change of address.
