The couple's 1-year-old son watched as his father punched, kicked, twisted, beat and threatened his 22-year-old mother before trying to set her on fire.

Demetrius A. Colvin is accused of repeatedly punching and kicking his 22-year-old girlfriend; twisting her arms and legs until her joints snapped; beating her with a closet rod; strangling her with a belt until she lost consciousness and beating her with the belt buckle; threatening her with a butcher knife and then cutting off her hair with it; pouring a flammable liquid on her head and trying to set her on fire, and urinating on her.

The couple's 1-year-old son watched the whole thing, the criminal complaint said.

Colvin, 21, of St. Paul, is charged with 12 felony counts of second- and third-degree assault, domestic assault by strangulation, false imprisonment and terroristic threats.

State records show that Colvin's criminal history includes another incident of domestic abuse in August 2006, fleeing police, giving false information to police, theft and drunken driving.

According to the complaint: D'Metra Tate called 911 at 10:50 a.m. July 15 and whispered to the dispatcher that she needed police and medics.

She described an assault that lasted almost two hours, the complaint said. At one prophetic point, Colvin dropped his cell phone and Tate hid it in her bedding in hopes she could later use it to call police, the complaint said.

Tate told police the next day that she had received almost 50 stitches in her back, leg and toe. Her arm and nose were broken, she said.

Colvin was arrested Wednesday when he was found hiding in a closet in Tate's home. Tate told officers he had arrived with his mother on Tuesday night and had apologized for assaulting her.

The complaint said that before his arrest, Colvin "admitted to his mother that he didn't think he beat Tate 'that bad.'" He later denied knowing what had happened to her.

Colvin is being held in the Ramsey County jail in lieu of $80,000 bail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance this afternoon.

Colvin dragged Tate down the stairs by her hair. He then locked her and the boy in the bathroom by shoving a chair against the door, called her an expletive and said, "Stay in the bathroom." About 10 minutes later, he opened the door and began chopping at her hair with a butcher knife.
When she ran downstairs and tried to hide in a closet, Colvin stood over her and attacked her with a silver pole, swinging it like a baseball bat and jabbing her with the end of it, creating circular puncture marks on her body
Colvin grabbed a belt and wrapped it around Tate's neck until she blacked out.
She got out of the closet, only to have Colvin pour a bottle of nail polish over her head and set her hair on fire.
Finally, when Colvin went downstairs, Tate grabbed the cell phone from under the bedding and called 911.
She added then that after the attack, Colvin ordered her to clean herself up and said he was taking her to a hotel. She told police she believed that he was planning to hide her so that her family would not see her injuries.

That is a different meaning of the word "prophetic" than I know. Is it possible the journalist meant "crucial"?

The poor, poor woman. And her poor, poor child. But at least there is every chance that this waste of space will now go away for a long, long time.

It's sorta sad to say but i wouldn't be surprised if the drop these charges down to misdemeanors. I was affected by the same situation. The initial charges brought against him were assault with a deadly weapon and cohersion. He beat me for a period of time with our 10 month old daughter in the same room crawling around and crying for me. At one point he even sat her outside the door because she was "getting in the way". Unfortunately the charges were dropped down to domestic battery. I think when it comes down to wether or not your living with the person your beating it makes a difference in the charges. Awesome how if you were to beat a total stranger that way you'd get years for the assault, but if you're doing it to your wife/husband you get slaps on the wrist, when the courts know it's probably not the first time it's ever happend.

My ex did 3 months for that charge, I still have slight hearing loss in one ear from it. Only good thing is that he served that time after he got picked up for 2 charges of poss of stolen veh.

For Reyeye and this woman I understand how terrifying it was. I pray things get better and you are able to sleep well at night and I thank God these monsters didn't succeed at taking your lives or those of your children.
