EVERETT, Wash – A private school principal from Arlington has been charged for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old student.

Mark Evan Brown, 37, is charged with one count of third-degree child rape.

Snohomish County prosecutors say Brown, the principal of Highland Christian School for three years, had exchanged hundreds of text messages and phone calls with the girl. Some of the messages encouraged the girl to run away from home.

On June 12, prosecutors say the girl took Brown up on the offer. He allegedly prepared a small, unused room at the school with a hide-a-bed and TV. He arranged for someone to pick her up and bring her to the school. That night, prosecutors say Brown gave the girl rum and had sexual contact with her.

The girl's parents thought she had run away and called police. They discovered the calls and text messages to and from Brown.

Detectives were able to track the girl down using a prepaid "go-phone." Court papers say she denied having sex with Brown up until Monday, when she admitted what happened.

Prosecutors also say Brown violated a protection order in which he was not allowed to have any contact with the girl. They have allegedly spoken three times on the phone since the order was made.

Brown arraigned Wednesday and has been booked into the Snohomish County Jail on $100,000 bail.

KING 5 first heard about these allegations against Brown a few weeks ago while detectives were investigating the case. We talked to him then and he told us he was just trying to protect this 14-year-old girl from committing suicide. He said that at no time was their relationship sexual.

His ex-wife says she was one of his previous victims....

Brown's ex-wife Casey says Brown has victimized more children – and she was one of them.

A few months shy of her 15th birthday, Casey started dating Brown and quickly the relationship became sexual.

He was 26. "You never think at that age this is a wrong situation," she said. "He did ask me to keep it secret."

Eventually her family found out. They didn't feel good about it, but Casey was in love.

Five years later she and Brown got married.

But soon after, the relationship soured. Brown, then 32, was coaching wrestling at Concrete High School and Casey said he was spending time with cheerleaders and exchanging text messages.

"They were very inappropriate, very inappropriate communications to a minor," Casey said.

She suspected there was more and so did others who called police. The Skagit County Sheriff's Office began investigating Brown, but didn't find enough evidence to charge him with a crime.

But whatever had happened, the Concrete School District didn't like it, and fired him.

Then Casey left him.

For 37 he is handsome and young looking. He obviously has an age he likes and probably could have went on this way for a good long time, since he isn't your typical fugly pedo. Good thing he was stupid enough to text. Don't these idiots know the phone company can pull up texts? I think all the blood in their bodies rushed to the penis and it renders them stupid.:dizzy:

What a dumbfuck. He's still contacting the girl.

A former private Christian school principal accused of sexually assaulting a student was ordered jailed Friday after the girl told detectives he's been sending her text messages, encouraging her to speak with his attorney.

Mark Evan Brown, 37, was ordered not to have contact with the girl, now 15, after he was charged in July with third-degree child rape. Brown is accused of encouraging the girl to run away from home in June and sexually assaulting her in a room he set up for her, complete with a hide-a-bed and television, at Highland Christian School in Arlington.

Detectives reported that the two exchanged hundreds of text messages before Brown was arrested for investigation of child rape, according to court documents.

A judge on Friday issued a $500,000 bench warrant for Brown's arrest after prosecutors reported that Brown and the girl once again were swapping text messages. Deputies were searching for Brown on Friday night.

Snohomish County sheriff's detective Rebecca Lewis earlier this week learned the girl had initiated contact with Brown several weeks ago. The teen got Brown's new cell phone number from his wife, by sending the woman a text message pretending to be someone else, deputy prosecutor Hal Hupp wrote in court documents filed Friday in Snohomish County Superior Court.

Brown and the girl have been sending text messages through a male friend of the girl living in Florida, the teen told detectives. Brown and the girl corresponded by sending messages to the girl's friend, who then forwarded the messages, Hupp wrote.

Lewis spoke with the girl's friend Friday. He sent the detectives several saved messages Brown allegedly wrote to the teen, including the following messages:

"If you want to get to the truth. You can sit down and talk with my attorney and she will tell you the complete truth. No matter what just tell her the trut (sic)"; "Will you meet with my attorney or my investigator?"; "If you don't lie then why are you lying for all of these other people? Sit down with my attorney, she will tell you everything. Mark."

The girl told Lewis that Brown has tried to convince her that she is being duped and asked her why she would want to destroy the lives of her friends, Hupp wrote.

The girl ultimately told Brown to stop sending her text messages, Hupp wrote in court records.

Brown on Thursday allegedly sent another text message through the third party. The message reportedly read: "Everything u wrote about me is a lie. None of that crap is true and I can prove it."

The girl is cooperating with police, Hupp wrote, but "it is accurate to say that she does not wish the defendant to be arrested."

Brown, who had been free on $100,000 bail, violated the conditions of his release if he sent the girl messages, Hupp wrote.

The former principal of Highland Christian Schools admitted Friday that he kidnapped a teenage student last year.

Snohomish County prosecutors dropped a third-degree child rape charge against Mark Evan Brown as part of a plea agreement reached with the Arlington father. Brown, 38, pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree kidnapping involving a 14-year-old girl.

He faces up to year in jail. Brown also will have to register as a convicted kidnapper with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years. Prosecutors also plan to ask that Brown be evaluated for sexual deviancy, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Halley Hupp said.

“This was a principal that didn’t have principles,” Hupp said.

Brown has adamantly denied raping the girl. He asserted the allegations were based on lies and the charge arose from a bad police investigation.

“I would never plea to something I didn’t do,” he said before Friday’s hearing. “I was there for about 10 minutes. By law what I should have done was call 911 or called her parents. I had a responsibility to report.”

Brown said he was called to the school that night by another teacher who reported students had broken in and were staying at the school. Brown said he mishandled the incident, and in the process put the welfare of one of the students above his own family.

Brown said he chose not to take the case to trial because he was worried that others, including another teacher and two students, who were at the school with the girl also would be charged with kidnapping. They would have incriminated themselves by testifying about what really happened that night, he said.

“Enough damage has been done by this,” Brown said.

Prosecutors remain convinced that there was probable cause to believe Brown sexually assaulted the girl and they planned to take the case to trial, Hupp said. The plea agreement reached a satisfactory resolution.

The kidnap charge is a more serious class of felony and Brown will have to register his address with police longer than if he’d been convicted of the child rape charge, Hupp said. Also, the kidnap conviction is a strike against Brown under the state’s three-strike persistent offender law, he said.

“From our point of view, while the charge didn’t have the word sexual in the title of the crime,” it is a more serious crime with greater implications, Hupp said. Brown secreted an underage student without her parents’ consent in the school where he was a leader, Hupp said.

Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies first arrested Brown on July 9, 2008, for investigation of unlawfully harboring the girl. Her parents reported to police that she had run away from home. Police found the girl using a trace on her phone.

He came to the private Christian school after he lost his previous job as a wrestling coach at Concrete High School in Skagit County. He was investigated there after reports of an inappropriate relationship with a female student.

That student denied she any sexual contact with Brown. She told Skagit County investigators they exchanged text messages, went to dinner together and Brown occasionally gave her a ride home. No charges were filed.

Brown and his wife were surrounded by family Friday as they left the courtroom. He is scheduled to be sentenced in November.

“This last year has been a nightmare — what I’ve put my family through,” Brown said. “When I get out, whatever amount of sentence, I want to get on with my life.”http://heraldnet.com/article/20090912/NEWS01/709129895
