Here's the video in HD (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22702.html)
Now, this is by far the most-hyped game on the PS3. It is one of the few exclusives that Sony still has (the few exclusives left are mostly in-house games). Even though there are rumors about a 360 version, THIS is the game that Sony fanboys are clinging to the most. Their hopes and dreams hinge on the success of this single game.
After watching the video... ...um...
I'm not impressed. The graphics aren't just miles away from the E3 promos of the last 2 years, they aren't even as good as Assassins Creed, Gears of War or COD4.
Some of the animation is great, like dropping from the ledge, and the fighting from Snake's back, but other animation is pathetic. The sneaking is stiff and repetitive, the AI characters look mildly better than the PS1 guys, and the Hiding-In-The-Can routine was laughable. I had a hard time with the cardboard box from MGS, they really should have gotten away from that crap.
The gameplay mechanics look pretty bad as well. Why orchestrate these involved battle scenes that are supposed to be frantic and hectic, and then have every gun-swap result in a GAME PAUSE as you fly through menus? This is the same menu bullshit from the PS1 game. Aren't we next-gen yet!? Do we really need the exclamation points circling the passed-out soldiers? Why not have their bodies rise and fall with their breathing, so the next-gen graphics can clue us into their status?
Very lame. And the mystery inventory space is lame as well. I like the new fashion of only carrying a few weapons at a time. Much more realistic.
I have a feeling that MGS4 and Halo3 are not going to be the games that the console-specific fanboys want them to be. Games like COD4 and Assassins Creed are going to be better. But the hype will give the former, inferior games higher scores, and the fanboys will play the hell out of tired, old franchises because that's what fanboys do.
People tend to forget that the reason we loved MGS on the PS1 and Halo on the XBox was because they were NEW, ORIGINAL, FRESH. There are games like this on the horizon, but we will ignore them in a frenzy of sequel-itis. And that is a shame.
