LA PORTE - A man attempted to use his 2-year-old daughter to shield himself from a stun gun on Tuesday after police responded to a domestic disturbance.
As La Porte City Police arrived just after 2 a.m. at the home in the 500 block of Scott Street, Brandon Hockman, 33, was seen letting the air out of his girlfriend's tires so she couldn't leave.
When Hockman saw the officers he ran back into the house.
"This is my (expletive) house, you (expletive)," Hockman reportedly said as police approached his door. "Get the (expletive) off my porch."
The girlfriend then reportedly told police the couple's 2-year-old daughter was still inside.
Officer Darin Mercer heard objects being thrown and furniture being broken inside the house so the police decided to try the back door where they were met with more resistance.
Officer Nate Thode kicked down the back door and pulled his stun gun out and pointed it at Hockman. It was then Hockman grabbed the child and used her as a shield, moving the toddler to block the stun gun's laser sight.
Thode holstered the weapon.
Then Mercer reportedly called Hockman a coward, he put the child down and placed his face up against a screen window. Mercer then shot bursts of a chemical agent into Hockman's face. That was followed by a missed stun gun shot from Thode, who then used three direct shocks to the neck to incapacitate Hockman.
Upon arriving at the La Porte County Jail, Hockman reportedly continued to be uncooperative and yelled, "Tase me, just (expletive) Tase me."
He further harmed himself when he slammed the back of his head into a brick wall, which caused bleeding, according to authorities.
Hockman is charged with resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor, child neglect, a Class D felony, domestic battery, a Class D felony, intimidation, a Class D felony, and battery to a police officer, a Class D felony.
