Puppy found cut in half, police call it foul play
Police suspect foul play

TACO
PHOENIX - Police are looking into a particularly violent case of animal cruelty.
It all began when Humberto Medina's family came home from vacation on Saturday and found their puppy cut in half. Someone had been watching the dog but some time between his last feeding and Medina's return, the dog was attacked.
Medina says it did not look like another animal had anything to do with it and now he is asking why. “If they have something against us, they can come confront me, not kill my dog. It's a little dog, it's a chihuahua, it doesn't hurt anybody.”
Police believe someone intentionally hurt the 8-month-old chihuahua. http://www.azfamily.com/yahoo_rss/stories/Phoenix_local_news_070608_puppy-half-yh.31d92ba4.html
When the dog was attacked the Medina family (dad, mom, and 3 of their 4 kids) was on vacation in California. An older son was watching the dog. The son left the pup in the backyard late Saturday morning with lots of water and shade. When the family got home at about 3:30 pm it was probably only a few hours when the crime was committed. There were three large drops of blood near where the dog was found and it's possible that Taco bit the killer. The family has put up fliers seeking the murderef and a reward is offered via "Silent Witness".

Was it a pissed off neighbor? Some sort of serial-killer-in-training? A vengeful enemy?
Anyway you look at it, it was beyond cruel to both the puppy and the family.

I know - the natural assumption is a yapping pup - but it happened during the middle of the day. In Phoenix. Where temperatures have been over 110 lately. Dogs tend to yap or bark less during the summer out here, and are more frequently panting and/or staying in the shade. Even if the dog WERE yapping to the point of someone going nuts - chopping the dog in half? I would expect a dog to be beaten to death perhaps out of rage, but not cut in half - which shows some degree of preparation and must be done calmly - not in a fit or rage. In any event, Phoenix allows civilians to file criminal charges by THEMSELVES against anyone else for a barking dog - it's the only crime that can be filed by anyone other than a Prosecutor. It's very easy to file criminal charges against someone else for this violation (PCC 8-2) - so I'm tending to think it's not a yapping dog scenario. The family is saying they believe it's racism - which I don't necessarily think either - but do believe it's an act of a sick MF that needs to be caught. Who knows what other acts that person may have already done or is in the process of doing? Goodness me . . .

Thanks, mwitzah and welcome!
I hadn't thought about the fact that it's hot there and dogs are sedate during that time. Makes sense. I agree that no matter what the "reason" in the person had, it is sick, sick, sick. Scary to think what else they are doing or could do.
Also interesting is the barking dog law. At times, I wish we had it here... even though my own dog would probably get caught in it too :) Some days I would report him myself... (he hates the turkeys we get wandering through)

Really sick and twisted. Cutting a puppy in half? So damn wrong! But honestly, that is the second time you mentioned pot and a violent criminal act. Seriously? You really think pot makes people beat kids or cut puppies in half? I don't wanna smoke with anyone you know if that is your experience.

... To think what it would take to cut a puppy in half... the thought process of getting an instrument to do that... Totally had to be planned. Period. People don't carry around instruments that do that just randomly "oh sorry officer I keep that in my back pocket just in case."

A sharp axe or machete could chop an 8-month-old chihuahua in half with one stroke. Even a sharp shovel. They said they only saw a few drops of blood so it had to be a clean cut.

It seems pot makes one less violent and more lazy as in, "Oh....hmm..it would be cool to cut a chihuahua in half....where's the doritos?"
Now Heroin...maybe a heroin junkie....but anywho that's sick....if someone did that to my dog...i'm afraid of how I might retaliate....I love my rat terrier....

Turns out Taco, the Chihuahua discovered severed in two earlier this month, was the victim of another animal not a deranged human, Phoenix Police said Wednesday.
Investigators took photos of the dog, whose owners discovered it in their back yard, to a trio of veterinarians for review.
After inspecting the pictures, the vets determined Taco met his cruel fate at the fangs of another animal.

This is good. Good that no person did it.
This is bad. Bad that a deranged animal is running around. Wonder why it just chomped Taco in half and didn't eat him...

Poor Taco...I have a chihuahua mix named Taco, we rescued him from a life on the streets. It's tough out there for a pup.
Im glad they were able to determine what happened to the poor little puppy.
RIP Taco.

Phoenix? Probably a coyote.
a coyote wouldn't do that. also a coyote could chew a dog in half unless it was eating and eating at it. coyotes jaws are not that powerful nor that big.
it could be a mountain lion, or possibly one of the wildlife that tends to be owned in the southwest...like tiger, lion, crocodile, and other various dangerous animals.
