BOCA GRANDE: The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to assist deputies in locating a subject that had run from them on foot.
Starting at around 8:00 p.m. Saturday night, a white male suspect engaged three different Lee County deputies in three separate attempts at provoking them to chase after him following minor traffic violations, according to the report.
The provocations occurred in Boca Grande, just a few minutes apart.
A short time after the suspect’s third attempt to get deputies to chase him, his unoccupied vehicle was spotted in a residential area of Lee County bordering Charlotte County. The car was parked, and the driver’s side door was open, according to the report.
Deputies began a foot search of the area for the driver and, within a short period of time, the man was spotted walking through dense mangroves in an area now in Charlotte County.
According to the report, the suspect began arguing with deputies and ignored their commands to get out of the water.
Reports state that the man continued to walk through the water and swam out approximately 30 feet beyond the mangroves.
Deputies say the man went under the water and resurfaced several times. One deputy even went into the water after the man in an attempt to locate and rescue him.
Search and rescue efforts included use of the CCSO helicopter as well as a Lee County Fire Department rescue boat.
The Lee County Fire Department located the suspect underwater, and brought the already deceased man to a nearby dock.
The suspect’s name will not be released until positive identification can be made, and the next of kin is notified.
