So, maybe you heard about it, but for some time now, there's been a great deal of controversy over a teacher in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, who used his platform as a high school science teacher to preach creationism, among other things. John Freshwater, 52, also "demonstrated" a device by burning a cross into at least one student's arm (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080708/ap_on_re_us/teacher_bible;_ylt=AvisZCBGjiQMTcdVtbSFWYsDW7oF).

My question? What's the goddamn controversy over? This asshole's finally been canned (as of last month), but some suggest officials knew about this as early as December, and that complaints had been coming in for the better portion of his 21 year career. Not that Seattle's school system is particularly exemplary, but given the secular nature of Western Washington, I can't believe this guy got away with this for so long.
But, hey...I guess that's what happens when a town has a significant Evangelical population. People can get away with all sorts of crazy shit...Just none of the sane stuff, like comprehensive sex education. What amazes me is that, despite all of the details being released, this guy still has supporters fervent enough to organize rallies calling for the resignition of the school board that voted to fire him. I guess blind faith extends a little beyond their belief in god.
For those of you in the Midwest...How do you do it, you brave people?
