A North Austin hotel manager has been charged in connection with the sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy and will face five additional sexual assault related charges later today, Sgt. Brian Loyd with the Austin Police Department’s child abuse unit said this morning.


According to an arrest affidavit, Douglas Wayne Ward gave the 10-year-old $90 after performing oral sex on the boy in May and June. The boy told officers that Ward threatened to kill him if he told anyone about the incidents. Loyd said there were several incidents over the course of two months that took place at the Budget Lodge at 9220 N. Interstate 35..


Loyd said that Ward will face about five additional charges this afternoon, including indecency with a child and retaliation charges, for an incident involving a 12-year-old boy who lived in the neighborhood and had been visiting a child who stayed at the hotel.


The 10-year-old boy told his mother about Ward when she found the $90 and asked him where he got the money, the affidavit said.


The affidavit says that the boy went to Ward’s office to ask for a key, and Ward then asked the boy to go to his office, where the boy says one of the incidents happened. The boy also told police that Ward took pictures of his genitals.


Ward has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, which is a first-degree felony. He is being held at the Travis County Jail with bail set at $70,000.

A Budget Lodge manager who police say sexually assaulted a 10-year-old boy who had been living at the North Austin motel also used photographs of bloodied children to threaten the boy and his 12-year-old friend, who he’s also accused of assaulting, according to police affidavits.

According to the affidavits, Ward befriended the 10-year-old, who had been living at the hotel with his mother, and met the 12-year-old when he came to visit the younger boy at the hotel on Interstate 35 near Rundberg Lane. The affidavits said Ward showed the boys photos of six other boys laying on their backs with blood on them. Ward told the boys that he had “killed those boys because they ‘snitched’ on him,” the affidavits said.

Sgt. Brian Loyd with the Austin Police Child Abuse Unit said he was not sure whether the children depicted in the photographs found on Ward’s office computer had been sexually assaulted. At least two computers found at the Budget Lodge have been seized, along with other media, Loyd said. Loyd said detectives will begin analyzing collected evidence this afternoon.
