Paul Bernardo

Bernardo was convicted in 1995 of sexually assaulting and murdering two teenage girls - Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French - while he videotaped their torture. He was also convicted in numerous sexual assaults. His former wife, Karla Homolka, who testified against Bernardo in exchange for a lighter sentence, was incarcerated at one time at the former Prison for Women, which was across the street from Kingston Penitentiary.

The former commander of Ontario's Canadian Forces Base Trenton was convicted after pleading guilty to two murders - Jessica Lloyd and Cpl. Marie-France Comeau - two sexual assaults and more than 80 counts of break and enter where he stole women's lingerie.

The self-proclaimed ``Beast of B.C.'' was convicted in 1982 of torturing and murdering eight girls and three boys, children as young as nine years old. He was sentenced to 11 consecutive life sentences. Olson died in September 2011 at the age of 71.

Mohammad and Hamed Shafia

The father and son were convicted this year of plotting and murdering four women in what was described as an honour killing. An Ontario court found the Shafias, including Mohammad Shafia's wife Tooba Mohammad Yahya, guilty of four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of their three daughters and Mohammad Shafia's first wife. The four women were found inside a car submerged in the Rideau Canal in Kingston, Ont., in 2009.

A former London, Ont.-area businessman, Buxbaum was convicted in 1986 for arranging his wife's murder by hiring a hitman to kill her. After a sensational trial, he was sentenced to life in prison. He was part of an escape plot from Kingston Penitentiary. He died at the prison's regional hospital in 2007 at the age of 67.

One of Canada's most infamous bank robbers during the First World War, Norman (Red) Ryan was first sentenced to six years in Kingston Penitentiary at the age of 17 for ``shooting with intent.'' After several more stints that included time in solitary confinement, he emerged to denounce the criminal lifestyle and said the prison had reformed him. Ryan was killed in 1936 during a liquor store hold up where he shot a police officer.

James Donnolly

The patriarch of the notorious Black Donnollys, James Donnolly was sent to Kingston Penitentiary for seven years in 1858 for throwing a ``wooden handspike'' valued at one cent at his neighbour Patrick Farrell, with whom he had been feuding.
